CANADA AND TEXTILE

by John B. Professional Writer

One of the country's oldest industries, the Canadian textile and apparel industry has been in existence for over 150 years.  It began as a natural fibre fabric industry with little or no mechanization and a low-trained, low-cost workforce concentrated in small communities. Now, it is an industry found in both urban and rural areas, using high-tech equipment requiring skilled personnel and producing a multitude of products ranging from underwear to high-strength textiles for various industrial sectors.

Today, the industry has a total turnover of over US$6.6 billion, with the majority of products exported to many countries including the United States. It provides employment for more than 48,000 workers.

In Quebec, it is also an important industrial sector. In the past, Montreal was known as the fashion capital of Canada. Although it has lost its title, it remains one of the most important fashion and clothing cities in Canada.
