Can You Pet a Racehorse? Find Out If Trained Horses Are Friendly to Humans!

by kapil Mehta # Guest Blogger

When it comes to horse races, you will find some amazingly beautiful horses who love to be with people and are very friendly. They allow you to touch them when you visit them at stadiums and stables. The friendliness of the horse differs when it comes to different people, and you might be wondering as to what determines this people-friendly behavior in them?

Understanding the friendliness of horses

When you visit horse races, you will find some horses very reserved and some friendly. Some horses have an inborn temperament when it comes to being touched by a person. In fact, some scientists state that there is recent research that claims that whether or not horse is people oriented or not becomes evident within the first year. This means when you visit major racing competitions and see the participants like the Breeders Cup Entries 2017 and the like, you will find that different horses behave in different ways more or less like people.

What do scientists say?

There was an exciting experiment in Nouzilly in France where experts detected the personalities of horses when it came to Welsh Ponies and horses of Anglo Arab origin. They decided to determine how these horses reacted to familiar as well as unfamiliar people. There was a test where the person familiar was inside a pen but did not move with the horse. The researchers documented the behavior of the horse and how it approached the person, licked, snipped or nibbled him or her. There were other tests where unknown people tried to touch the horse. There were some cases where the horse knew the person and somewhere the horse did not know the individual. The comfort levels of the horse with the person were measured and determined by how long the horse took to approach the individual. There were more tests done to determine whether ponies and horses changed their behavior with age. The same tests were repeated when they were eight months old, 1.5 years old and 2.5 years old.

Results of these tests

The results revealed that these individual horses and ponies changed when it came to the ways they reacted with people. The ones that were people friendly and oriented were more approachable when they were a year or two years old. These friendly horses were consistent when it came to licking and nibbling the individual in pen. The behavior of every horse was, in fact, consistent whether the individual was known or not.

This means when you meet horses at different races and competitions you will find that they have an inborn temperament that is evident when they are small. This behavior stays consistent even when they grow up. This means when you visit major horse racing tournaments and other competitions you will find that these different horses might be superstars when it comes to the racing tracks but they have their tastes when it comes to liking people just like humans!
