Potatoes probably show up on the menu at breakfast restaurants denver almost as much as eggs do.  The potato is one of America’s favorite starches and we enjoy them at any time of the day.  But potatoes go particularly well with breakfast and show up mostly in the form of hashbrowns, the crispy faithful sidekick to your eggs.

Hash browns (or hashbrowns or hashed browns), are traditionally shredded potatoes, although they can also be diced, that are pan fried to a golden brown.  Depending on where you are in the country, hash browns made from cubed or diced potatoes are referred to as home fries.  You’ll usually find those fried up with onions and peppers and because the potato is in bigger pieces they’re often boiled first to partially cook them.  Hash browns are a staple item of diners and breakfast restaurants in Downtown Denver and around the country.  The first known mention of “hashed browned potatoes” is by food author Maria Parloa in 1888.  Over time the name was shortened to its current form.  Some believe that hash browns were developed from the Swiss dish called rösti, which is a farmer’s breakfast made from diced potatoes fried with leftover pieces of meat and vegetables.

Frozen food technology took off in the 1950’s and Ore-Ida (founded in 1952) was at the forefront of frozen potato products.  They first offered frozen French fries, but eventually added their famous tots and hash browns, allowing millions of people to cook their own restaurant style breakfast potatoes at home.
