BIM Fever Gripping US Construction Industry

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is being deployed on a wide array of projects all over the world. It is not just limited to building construction but has extended to infrastructure, industrial and natural resource projects as well. BIM has facilitated external collaboration of skills and standardization of deliverable. It is also developing 3D custom libraries and software customization and catering to interoperability solutions. Today, the trend is to make some vital arrangements towards improving the effectiveness of the broader BIM ecosystem, representing an important evolution of BIM maturity for the whole industry.
Market Forecast
As per the market research done by Dodge Data Analysis, 9.1% growth is forecasted in the US Multifamily Housing construction for the upcoming year 2016, which is shown below in the table. The strong rebound in multifamily housing is understandable from the drop in the US homeownership rate to 64.7% as of 30th June 2014, which is the lowest since 1995 considering Bloomberg Market analysis. It is expected that the US population will put further downward pressure on single-family construction but will offset the BIM development by laying upward pressure on multifamily construction with communal maturity.

The BIM Effect
In accordance with the market forecast, it is possible to visualize how the BIM Effect will be crucial in near future. The Smart Market Report Study (2014) conducted by Mc Graw Hill Construction shows BIM implementation to be strong with the commercial buildings, where 85% of the very high BIM engagement contractors use it. Moreover, the Mc Graw study has shown the Government buildings to attract an above-average number of very high BIM engagement contractors (79%). Besides, BIM for institutional buildings, especially healthcare is extremely popular among very high BIM engagement contractors (85%) and is dominated by large firms (64%).
MEP trades score well with US owners at a very high level of BIM involvement (68%) and with the largest construction budget (57%). Owing to virtual coordination and prefabrication, MEP trades are increasingly using BIM on large and complex US projects. Contractors are doing the most model-driven prefabrication today (76%) with 95% of them expecting to do model-driven prefabrication within a few years. Both model-driven layout in the field (50%) and model-driven prefabrication (40%) are considered to be high rated construction-phase BIM activities.
