Dance as if no one’s watching!” and that is applicable to all those who start to groove with music and can’t control themselves when the beats take over. But why is it, that dancing is thought to be predominantly for the young? Surprisingly, if you have grandparents in your family, it’s time you get them to dance, as it would have superb effects on their health! No I am not asking for something that will physically strain them, like Indian classical or salsa, but mild dancing would work wonders on them, certainly more than you thought! Check them out:

Dance Benefits
Improve cognitive fitness

With aging comes the danger of forgetfulness and fading memory is not at all welcome. Also, nerve related problems crop up. It is scientifically proven that dancing helps improve the cognitive fitness in elderly people. Mental fitness is enhanced drastically if elderly people are involved in dancing. I am currently associated with a Dance Institute in Delhi, and my trainer suggested light dance moves for my grandparents, which would help them stay mentally fit, and have improved motor performance and reaction time.

Increased balance

You would often come across incidents wherein old people fall because of loss of balance. This type of fall is highly risky as it might prove fatal or cause severe damage to the weak bones of elderly people. Not only bones, there are chances that they might get hurt in ways whose effects are irrevocable. Dancing has proved to be savior in this case. They are brilliant in improving the balance of elderly people, minimizing their chance of falling down and any further mishap.

Emotional uplift

Our grandparents are often seen sulking at life and everything around them. It is also pretty common for them to go into depression as they see no hopes for them in their life, and you would often hear them complaining, “What is there for us to live?” Well, dance to stay fit and stay happy. The trainers of the dance academy in Delhi I go to, is thinking of coming up with classes which would facilitate the dancing of elderly people to ensure they have a stable emotional health. When people meet other people of the same age, they start forming bonds and these bonds help them develop a positive attitude towards life.

Longevity comes as a byproduct of the above. Dancing among the elderly is okay, only uphill a particular age, due to medical reasons. So, if you are planning to make your sweet old grandparents dance, make sure you know thoroughly about their medical background- so that they are fit and happy during the latter part of their old age.
