by Rashi S. Blogger

Salt has a critical role to play in maintaining our health. Being a primary source of sodium and chloride, it is vital for nerve and muscle functioning. It maintains the pH balance, regulates fluids, facilitates digestion, and control blood pressure. In general, we have two options for salt – regular table salt and rock salt.

The blog mentions the benefits of consuming sendha namak or halite, a type of rock salt, in fasting. However, let us understand the significance of sendha namak in fasting and why regular table salt is not preferred in fasting.

Significance of sendha namak in fasting

Also known as saindhava in Ayurveda, sendha namak is given preference over regular table salt for several reasons.

Sendha namak is the pursed form of salt that unlike regular table salt does not go through any chemical processing, and thus is free from environmental pollutants. Foods consumed during fasting should not be stomach heavy and have mild effects on the digestive system. Owing to great laxative and cooling properties that regular salt does not have, sendha namak is considered safe for consumption during fasting. Being low in sodium and high in potassium, it keeps the body cool from the inside and maintains the balance of fluids (electrolytes) without disturbing the blood pressure levels.
