Avian Mortality & Bird Flight Diverters As Solution

by Bird Flight Diverter IndoDivertâ„¢ - Bird Flight Diverter

For years the mortality of avian species due to collisions with Power lines has been identified as a potential problem worldwide. Avians are endangered to collision with unnatural structures specifically those developed by humans. Shaking hands with the modern era, resulting in increase in new development and infrastructure always boosting the probability ratio of mortality. The actual figure which can define the estimate of avian mortality due to collisions with powerlines varies due to lack of studies in the said sector.

Avian collisions with powerlines differ due to many factors such as habitat type, species size, and scavenging rates.

Numerous avian species specifically endangered one is more inclined to collisions with powerlines because of their huge infrastructures and great height which directly or indirectly falls under avians flying path and leads to collision due to their poor frontal vision. whereas many species are potentially less vulnerable to collisions with distribution lines

Worldwide researches also elaborate that in all there are 245 avian species, which are well known to strike with powerlines very frequently. The most common victims are shorebirds, waterfowl, cranes, herons, tetraonids, and passerines. The ratio of collisions often occurs during migration, which underscores the need to understand impacts across the annual cycle.

To reduce the said mortality factors around the globe, researchers suggested the below-mentioned precaution that is well proved in reducing collisions:-

  • Marking Balls

  • Spirals

  • Bird Flight Diverters

  • Flappers

  • Led Bird Diverter

  • Painting lines

Out of all the said segments, bird flight diverters and led bird diverters showed miraculous results in reducing avian mortalities. If we discuss the colour combination or contrast  It is suggested to use yellow or white-coloured markers as they will increase the visibility in low light, while red coloured markers should be more adequate in full daylight.

Other effective measures can be taken into consideration while planning new powerlines:-

  • Making sure Avians won't get disturbed in their frequent migration area or periods.

  • Taking initiative with regards to environmental conditions in areas away from powerlines routes while planning old or new ones.

  • Converting overhead powerlines to underground scenarios wherever possible.

Once we are able to take these effective measures into consideration/priority, the chances of reducing avian mortality.
