Avian collisions with powerlines is a big matter of concern around the globe. Usually, a collision takes place because avian species are unable to identify obstacles like powerlines or earth wire from a long distance due to their poor frontal vision.

Avian Collisions with powerlines always creates the radius of a big threat to power supplies as they create huge chaos as well as destructions to electrical supplies, which results in a power failure. The sounds of Powerline wire created while the discharge of energy plays a major role in affecting the natural environment in the said surrounding.

Avian mortality is always an effective point of concern, may it be electrocution or collision or a short circuit with powerlines. It's been observed by several researchers that electrocution only arises when avian species try to make contact with 2 live wire or live wire and earthed tower while extending their wings during landing and starting of their flight. The sudden short circuit leads to instant death.

Mortality due to collision with powerlines takes place because the topmost wire is very thin, avian species were unable to identify them from long distance as most of them have a very poor frontal vision and hence collide unexpectedly, which results in sudden death most of the time. This majorly happens while avian species hunt for nesting, fooding, hunt for pray as well as saving themselves from predators.

To keep effective control on this mortality of avian species worldwide -wildlife authorities/ associations insisted and implemented multiple standards to mitigate bird collisions against transmission lines, which includes:- Rerouting Lines, Burying Cables, Or Marking Them, Particularly The Ground Wires more visible and also installing line marking devices such as bird flight diverter is a must.

The main emphasis on launching bird diverter is to make powerlines more visible to avian species and reducing the probability of collisions.  After all these implementations market players have launched many types of marking devices out of which these are majorly available or we can say are in demand:-

  • Spirals

  • Marking Balls

  • Flappers

  • Bird Flight Diverters

  • Spiral PVC rolls are the most commonly used flight diverters for ground wires installed at regular intervals.

  • In the end, we like to add that Installing bird flight diverters is an effective solution to reduce avian mortality.
