Australia Immigration Pathways for Parents of Immigrants

by Abhinav Immigration Services Digital Marketing Executive
Moving abroad usually requires migrants to leave their family members and community behind in the home country. However, after economically establishing themselves in Australia, many immigrants choose to invite their parents to live with them in the foreign land, by sponsoring their parents for Australia immigration.

Fortunately, parents do not need to meet the same eligibility requirements that work visa aspirants are obligated to fulfill. Most parent visas require the applicant to have an eligible sponsor, pass the balance-of-family test, meet certain basic health and character requirements, and fulfill other specific conditions.

There is usually no maximum age limit for parents, and no condition for them to work in an in-demand occupation that features on the Australia Skilled Occupation List. Some of feasible visa pathways for parents are listed below.

Parent Visa (Subclass 103)

This visa allows the parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to permanently move to the country. The parent can subsequently apply for Australian citizenship, if eligible.

Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173)

This visa allows the parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live, work or study in Australia for a two year period. Eventually, the parent can become a permanent resident by applying for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) – if eligible.

Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)

This Australia PR visa allows the aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to permanently relocate to Australia. The parent should be old enough to receive age pension in Australia. The visa holder can eventually apply for citizenship, if eligible.

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870)

This visa allows the parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to visit Australia for three to five years at a time. The parent can apply for further visas to extend their visit, until they complete a total of ten years in Australia. The parent cannot work in the country.

Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 884)

This visa allows the aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live, work or study in Australia for a two year period. The parent should be old enough to receive age pension in Australia.

Subsequently, the parent can become a permanent residency Australia by applying for the Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 864) – if eligible.

Having the support system of family members makes the transition to a new country more comfortable and convenient. The Australia immigration pathways for parents have a high application fee, and can have extended backlogs which causes delays in the application processing time. To identify the most appropriate visa option for their requirements and avoid procedural hurdles, aspirants can seek the guidance and support of authentic immigration consultants.
