The Australia Visa Application Pathways for Skilled Immigration to Tasmania

by Abhinav Immigration Services Digital Marketing Executive
The pristine natural abundance, temperate climate, and healthy environment of Tasmania distinguishes it from other urban centres in Australia. The Australia visa application pathways in this state invite skilled workers, investors, students and sponsored employees to participate in the vibrant and unique culture – with the metropolitan region of Greater Hobart attracting a range of immigrants.

Over the past decade, Tasmania’s population has grown at a faster rate than that of France. Currently, overseas and interstate migration are the primary drivers of population growth in the state. More than 20% of the population was born overseas, which has ensured ethnic and cultural diversity. While mining, forestry, agriculture and tourism have emerged as predominant industries in the state’s economy, small businesses also contribute greatly to the employment rate. The state also has the lowest housing costs in Australia.

Considering the growing interest in Tasmania as an ideal immigration destination, various pathways can be pursued to work and reside there, on a permanent or temporary basis:

Skilled Migrants

Those who can fulfil the skills requirements of Tasmania’s labour market may be eligible for permanent migration to the state by applying for the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) or Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190); or live and work temporarily in Tasmania by securing the Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 489). This is a popular pathway, since state nomination provides extra points under the Australia PR Points Calculator, and may accelerate the application processing time.

Business Migrants

Experienced businesspersons or investors can benefit the economy by starting or purchasing a local business to generate employment, or making targeted investments. The Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (Subclass 188) is a temporary residence gateway, while the Business Talent (Permanent) visa (Subclass 132) allows the nominee to reside permanently in Australia. Subclass 188 visa holders may eventually attain permanent residence by applying for the Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (Subclass 888).

Employer Sponsorship

Through the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187), employers in Tasmania can sponsor skilled workers from overseas to fill a job vacancy that could not be allocated to a local Australian. This visa allows immigrants to settle permanently in the state, provided they commit to working in the company that sponsors them, for at least the initial two years.

International Graduates

Those who have graduated from a post-secondary educational institution in Tasmania after completing at least one year of academic study in the state may be eligible for permanent residence under Subclass 189 or 190, and temporary stay under Subclass 489.

Census 2016 places the population of Tasmania at 519,050 people – with nearly 20% of residents over 65 years of age. This implies that the state is in need of a young workforce to boost the local economy, which can be supplied by ambitious immigrants who can fulfil the skill requirements of the labour market. To strike the ideal work-life balance in the Apple Isle of Australia, it is advisable to explore these efficient Australia visa application pathways.
