An Overview Of Nut Milk And Its Different Types

Dairy-free diets are rising by the day. Luckily the alternatives to cow’s milk are plenty. If you are intolerant to lactose or follow a vegan diet or have a dairy allergy or want the best plant-based milk on offer, then nut milk is the answer.

How are nut milk made?

It is a dairy substitute made of different nuts. First, the nuts are roasted after removing their shells. Then they are soaked in water, crushed into a paste, and blended with water. The liquid that you get from this process is nut milk. In some scenarios, flavouring, thickeners, sugar, and salt are added.

What are the variants available?

  • Almond milk: It has a delicate and a light creamy texture. Unsweetened almond milk has lesser calories than skimmed cow’s milk. However, most of the almond milk has less protein than dairy milk. It is rich in Vitamin E that maintains your skin and eyes. Almond milk also supports your immune system. Most of the almond milk variants are filled with calcium and other nutrients like Vitamin D. Almond milk blends with any food item. You could use it in sweet or savoury items. Unsweetened almond milk goes well with coffee too. They are best for baking, desserts, and smoothies.

 

  • Cashew milk: Although people prefer it in the snack form, they are a rich alternative to cow’s milk. It is less nutty in flavour and is rich in minerals like zinc and selenium, which supports the immune system and reproduction. So, if you consume a 100ml of cashew milk, you get 1g of protein and around 30 calories. Cashew milk is often used in curries. Alternatively, you can pour it in cereals, use it to make smoothies, and blend it with shakes.

 

  • Coconut milk: It is the preferred nut milk in the list. They are made from pressed coconut flesh in combination with water. Coconut milk has a creamy consistency that is like cow’s milk. They do have a tinge of coconut flavour to them. The milk is a source of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, Iron, and selenium. They are also high in calories and saturated fats which usually benefits weight loss and metabolism. Although coconut milk is useful for baking, you can make your porridge with them. Coconut milk porridge reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. They are also used to thicken the sauces and bring about lovely flavour to South Indian curries.

 

  • Hazelnut milk: Most of the hazelnut milk are fortified with minerals, calcium, and so on. They are also low in saturated fat. Hazelnuts are high in Vitamin E, and dieticians believe the milk improves the cholesterol levels. Hazelnut milk has its distinctive taste that you can enjoy it in its pure form. It is a beautiful addition to hot chocolate and coffee as well.
