Alloy

An alloy is a mixture or metallic solid solution composed of two or more elements. An alloy will contain one or more of the three: a solid solution of the elements (a single phase); a mixture of metallic phases (two or more solutions); on inter metallic compound with no distinct boundary between the phrases.

History of alloy

First alloy was invented in Bronze Age 3500-1000BC. When men discovered that iron could be strengthened with the addition of carbon to create wrought iron and copper and tin could be combined to make bronze. This was the beginning of the Bronze Age with stronger weapons, sturdier utensils and shiner jewelry.

Without the invention of alloys we’d be left deficient in several areas. The invention of Airplane which also features in this list would have been impossible. Alloys are essential in all the fields -construction, transportation, medicine, biotechnology and list go on. One of the uses of alloys is used in the wheels.

History of alloy wheels

Previously to the development of the alloy wheels, wheels were formed of two pieces of pressed steel, the rim and the disc. A transitional design was hybrid utilizing a steel disc for strength and an aluminum rim for weight savings. Such designs were used by Porsche and Jaguar in the 1950’s and as the time passes on and with the advancement of the technology new models of alloy wheels are launched.

One of the biggest positive points of alloy wheels is its weight. The weight of alloy wheels is lighter in comparison to other like wheels made of steel. Less weight turn has a performance benefit because the car, particularly the suspension, has less weight to lug around. This is why performance cars almost make a car more agile, better handling and more fuel efficient.

Alloy wheels are made from aluminum or aluminum mixed with another metal like magnesium. They are manufactured in a way that promotes strength, one of the reasons they are very popular for race cars. Alloy wheels are also prone to bending over pot holes.

3.    Heat dissipation

Alloy dissipates heat better than steel, so cars with alloy wheels may see a slight braking improvement, since there is less heat near the brakes. There is also less chance of a wheel cracking.  Alloys typically have an open spoke design that lets more air in to cool the brakes.

 4.    Variety

though there is a decent selection of steel wheels in different designs available, there are many more choices when it comes to alloy wheels. There are many companies that specialize in producing a wide range of light, high quality alloy wheels. There is also a larger choice of different sizes with alloy wheels.

5.    Appearance

Generally speaking, alloy wheels are better looking than steel wheels. Alloys have a variety of finishes, including polished, chromed and painted. They also come in one-piece designs or multi-piece designs. Stamped steel wheels are generally much plainer looking and are either chromed or painted. However, steel wheels are popular among classic car enthusiasts for their vintage appearance.
