Image Acupuncture may be just what the doctor ordered, so to speak, when it comes to treating infertility. When traditional forms of treatment don't work, when side effects become too much to deal with, or when a more holistic approach to treatment is desired, acupuncture may be a good alternative treatment for infertility.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been used for centuries as treatment for many conditions. Small needles, not much thicker than a hair, are placed in the skin in strategic points on the body depending on the condition being treated. Acupuncture is not as invasive as you might think since the needles are very thin and are not placed too deeply into the skin. Acupuncture treatment may include the use of medicinal herbs to increase the effects of treatment.

Why Choose Acupuncture?

In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that the body's energy, or qi, flows along certain pathways in the body, referred to as channels or meridians. These meridians correspond to different parts of the body. Sometimes this energy flow is disrupted. Acupuncture restores the flow and balance of the qi to all parts of the body. Even if you do not believe in energy flow and balance, acupuncture does have the ability to stimulate nerves, muscles and other tissues.

How Could Acupuncture Help Infertility

Although there are numerous causes for infertility, acupuncture can help many different systems in the body. By stimulating key energy points along various meridians, blood flow is improved, hormonal balance is restored, and functioning of sexual organs can be increased. This includes stimulation of the ovaries and follicles, increased flow of hormones to sexual organs, and increased blood flow to the uterus, allowing for a thicker lining of the endometrium. Acupuncture is also beneficial for infertility treatment in men, as it can improve both sperm quality and quantity.

Benefits of Acupuncture as Treatment for Infertility

There are many reasons to choose acupuncture if you suffer from infertility. These include:
  • Less side effects than most infertility treatments
  • Lower cost than many other treatments
  • May be used alone or in conjunction with other fertility treatments
  • Beneficial to both the mind and body

Less side effects than most infertility treatments.
Although the risk of side effects are possible, these risks are small compared with other fertility treatments.
Lower cost than many other treatments.
Although not cheap, acupuncture is cheaper than most other forms of infertility treatment available today.
May be used alone or in conjunction with other fertility treatments.
Although the use of acupuncture alone may be enough to reverse infertility, it is safe to use in connection with any other form of infertility treatment you may wish to use.   Beneficial to both the mind and body.
Not only does acupuncture rebalance energy along the meridians that improve physical health, it also has positive benefits to mental health while reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

Precautions to Using Acupuncture to Treat Infertility

Prior to receiving your first acupuncture treatment, you should do the following:
  • Choose a certified acupuncturist
  • Choose a provider that deals specifically with infertility issues
  • Have a pregnancy test
  • Inform the acupuncturist of any other infertility treatments you are receiving
  • Notify the provider of any current medications or other health problems you may have
  Choose a certified acupuncturist.
Certified acupuncturists are proven to have the proper training and knowledge necessary for treatment.
Choose a provider that deals specifically with infertility issues.
There are special considerations in the treatment of infertility with acupuncture. Certain areas should not be stimulated during conception or pregnancy.
  Have a pregnancy test.
If you are pregnant, the provider may avoid certain areas that may affect your pregnancy or unborn baby, such as areas in the abdomen and pelvic regions.  Inform the acupuncturist of any other infertility treatments you are receiving.
Different meridians may need to be treated or avoided depending on the type of fertility treatment you are receiving or where you are at in that treatment. Ideally, acupuncture should begin three to four months prior to receiving other fertility treatment.
Notify the provider of any current medications or other health problems you may have.
Many systems of the body are connected and may affect each other in various ways. Medication also affects different parts of the body. Certain medications and medical conditions may require different treatment or may even be able to be helped while being treated for infertility.

Risks of Acupuncture

There is a small risk of side effects with acupuncture including infection and miscarriage. That's why it is important to inform your provider regarding medications, health issues, possible pregnancy, and other fertility treatments.
