What is fitness? For some it has to do with health, for others the want to lose (or gain) weight, or to improve one’s physique. But fitness is so much more than that, and should be made a priority in everyone’s daily lives. Fitness isn’t just about how we appear to and are perceived by others on the outside; it’s also about how we operate and function on the inside. Fitness isn’t just physical; it’s psychological, nutritional, and medical.

In Tokyo alone, there are hundreds - if not thousands - of gyms, sports and boxing clubs offering claims of easy paths and short cuts to good health and a better body. But the truth is: there are no short cuts to good health and personal fitness. Many international expats living in Tokyo who are serious about their bodies join these gyms but end up discouraged and complain at the lack of quality of expert trainers and equipment.

What are needed to achieve total fitness is not only the wish to do so and the will to commit to it, but also sometimes the influence of outside help. Whether you’re into yoga, weight training, boxing, kickboxing, martial arts, or Pilates, being guided by an expert can be the make-or-break deciding factor in how successful you are in achieving your goals. An expert can assess your needs, and then teach and train you how to incrementally increase stamina, develop endurance, and build mental and physical strength. Through sessions that include weight lifting, cross training, and cardio vascular exercises, an expert trainer can guide and steer you in the proper direction.

Resist the temptation to do things on your own. While doing so might save you a few yen in the short term; in the long term you could be doing more damage than good. A true expert is an expert because they’re educated and experienced in subjects such as physical fitness, physical therapy, physiotherapy, diet andfood nutrition, diet planning, diseasecontrol and management, and diagnosis. Working with one will not only help you achieve total fitness, but also a long-lasting one with benefits that continue into your future. An expert trainer is there to provide the information, support, motivation, and tools to see your way to total fitness.

Finding an expert in Tokyo isn’t impossible at all. Just look for those who are certified fitness trainers and have educational backgrounds in things like physiotherapy, health science, and sports medicine.Seek out a gym that will first assess you and learn your medical history as opposed to simply sending you straight to the exercise machines.Wherever you live in the greater Tokyo area, rest assured that there are trainers out there who do actually care about delivering the results you desire. All you need to do is look and ask – the next time you visit a sports center or boxing gym, enquire about the qualifications of their staff and trainers to help you make a more informed choice of gym to join.
