A Walkthrough on the Construction Process of a House

by Kevin Smith Author

Building a custom home can be exciting, especially when you understand how the construction process works. Here's an overview of what happens before contractors complete your dream house:

Preparation of the Construction Site

Using a backhoe or bulldozer, the first thing contractors will do with your chosen land is to clear the debris, trees, and rocks. The soil will also be tested depending on its nature, and site leveling will be conducted before the actual construction. If necessary, they'll also make alterations on the area's topography to alter the water flow across the area.

Pouring Concrete Footings and Foundation

Once the site has been cleared of all debris, the builders will dig trenches for footings, and then pour concrete. Drains and a special mesh for termite protection will also be constructed.

When the slab is laid, and the footings are complete, the concrete needs to be cured. When this step is done, the foundation will be waterproofed up to the finished grade level. Holes will be created in the wall to allow the routing of water supply and drainages.

Framing, Siding, and Roofing

After the excavation, foundation, and concrete processes, the carpentry crew will put up the lumber framework for the floors, walls, and ceilings. When this is complete, they'll move on to the sheathing, siding, and roofing installation.

Running Plumbing and Electrical Lines

When the interior is done, masons, electricians, plumbers, and HVAC specialists will enter the scene. During the installation of the rough-in electrical and plumbing system, these will be put in place:

·         Pipes and wires

·         Sewer lines and vents

·         Water supply lines

·         Bathtubs and shower units

·         Ductwork for the HVAC system

·         HVAC vent pipes

Hanging Drywall and Finishing Trim

Your house's interior will start to look finished after the drywall is hung, and the ceilings are installed. The seams will be taped, mudded with joint compound, and sanded. Then, the door and window casings will be placed.

The Completing Stage

During this stage, walls are painted, and ceilings are finished with colorant or texture. The kitchen and bathroom countertops are put in place, and the installation and hook-up of finished electrical and plumbing systems are completed.

The flooring throughout the house will be laid, and the worksite will be cleaned up. This is the best time to schedule a final walkthrough with your contractor.
