A Research Paper: The Struggle Is Real
by Vivien Smith Academic WriterTechnically,
a research paper is an assignment that requires you to study a certain field,
formulate a theory (thesis) and then use the sources you have studied to prove
your point of view. Although it does sound quite simple, in practice the
process is rather complicated, and there are certain stumbling stones that
often prevent one from succeeding.
The first
dangerous factor is procrastination. It always seems that there are a few weeks
left, though, in fact, every stage of a research paper process requires some
time and thus, the earlier you start, the better. In practice, many students
find it convenient to make a schedule and then follow it up to the very moment
of submitting. With it, you will be able to control the speed of fulfillment
and thus, there won’t be any unpleasant surprises connected with
deadlines.
The second
monster is research itself. It often happens that a
student doesn’t understand the nature of research and confuses it with simply
quoting the sources. Research is a very complicated process that aims to come
up with a new scientific product. No matter what subject you are writing for –
if there is no innovation in your writing, it will be marked as useless. Bizarrely
enough, you can come up with the wildest things as a thesis statement, but as
long as you can prove it convincingly enough, no one will be able to question
its relevance. Also, when supporting a certain thesis with facts, one shouldn’t
just cite sources, but rather it is required to retell what a respected author
stated in his work in your own words.
The third
problem is citing your sources. Any citation without a reference to the
original work is considered plagiarism and is punished severely. That’s why it
might cause so many problems for a student. In fact, even the slightest
reference to someone else’s work should be cited properly, and not every
student grasps this idea from the very beginning.
Finally,
there is the problem of formulating a thesis. There are many requirements one
should follow in the process of its formulating: a thesis statement should be concise, clear,
yet fresh and arguable. In other words, there is no use choosing something that
was discussed and proved a long time ago. Instead, try finding something
original and worth spending time on.
Generally
speaking, a research paper is a great tool to extend one’s knowledge in
particular areas and try to become a scholar himself. However, just like any
other endeavor it requires certain skill and patience. It is OK if your first
research paper came up as a disaster. In fact, this is the only way to learn
how to do it properly. You will do better next time. And after a couple of
times, you will be as good as anybody else.
