A Quick guide for Pasta cooking via Pot and stainer

by Anna Rose Blogger

The strainer that you find with the pasta pots is supposed to make the draining process simpler. The method can get risky when you strain water on your own over the sink, as it involves boiling water. Instead of trying to drain the water and avoiding the pasta from falling into the sink at the same time, just use a pasta pot that comes with a colander insert. These inserts or strainers are smaller than the pasta pot and fit perfectly inside them. The way you use them defines your cooking experience.

Placing The Pot

The first step to start with is setting the pasta pot on a burner or an induction that is almost of the same size as the bottom of your pasta pot. Fill the pot with water and set the temperature on high so that the water comes to boil. Usually, an 8 quart or 12 quart is a suitable size for home cooking pasta. You can make up to 3 pounds of pasta in a 12-quart pasta pot. If you are not sure of the quantity of water you should put, start with a little amount.

Placing The Colander/Strainer

When the water is boiling in the pot, put pasta in the colander. As soon as the water starts boiling, you have to insert the colander in the pot. Now when you place the colander, it might wither rest along the rim or on the bottom of the pot. It entirely depends on the model you are using. Now check the level of water, make sure that the pot is filled with at least twice or 3 times the height of the pasta that is sitting in the water. Also, push down the pasta to the extreme bottom so that it has completely emerged in water. If you are using spaghetti noodles, ensure that you break them down before adding it in the colander.

Lifting The Colander

It usually takes up to ten to fifteen minutes for the pasta to boil, depends on how you like it. Some like their pasta chewy (al dente) while others might prefer it soft and pliable. Once you think it is done, lift the colander by holding the handle and keep it over the pot for a while. Shake the strainer a little, and you are done.
