A New Documentary about the Veteran Game: Street Fighter II

A new documentary titled “Here Comes A New Challenger” will take you to the depths of the game and the legacy that it has left in the hearts of the gamers.

If you haven’t tried the game just yet, take my word for it, lad- you should try it. Even if you have Xbox Series X or Sony PlayStation 4, it does not matter, play the game one time, and then you can uninstall it if you hate it.

In layman’s language, Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is one hell of a fighting game.

The game developed by Capcom was originally released for arcade systems way back in the early 90s and had introduced some characters like E Honda, Ryu, Blanka, Ken, yoga master Dhalsim, Balrog, Vega, Chun Li, etc., which slowly captured the imaginations of the young who in turn turned the characters into sensational pop culture icons. The characters remained a phenomenon throughout the ’90s with the game’s subsequent sequels.

What was just a basic fighting game branched off into a franchise, merchandise, toys, movies, and an awful lot of products that filled the bedroom of the young fans throughout the world.

Now, the modern documentary “Here Comes A New Challenger” seeks to rep not only the facts that made the game an iconic business product but it also offers some nuanced analysis of the depths of the game especially the history of the game on home formats, for instance, Super Nintendo, that provided the interface between gamer and the arcade game for the time up until some sophisticated hosts started arriving on the market.

The documentary is the brainchild of Oliver Harper, who created the sensational film “In Search of the Last Action Heroes,” which has been loved by all who had formed the fanbase of all 1980s action flicks especially the ones that connect with iconic actors like Bruce Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, etc.

The original Arcade release Street Fighter II: The World Warrior had become an instant hit at the time of its release in 1991 and had bagged Best Game of 1991 award in the fifth annual Grand Prize. Over the years, the game has been the recipient of multiple words and is still talked about to this day. For instance, the game has etched its name in the Gamer’s Edition of Guinness Book of World Records as the first game to use combos, the biggest selling coin-operated games, and most cloned fighting game ever. It has also undisputedly made the Best Games of All Time lists made by the likes of Yahoo!, Empire, Guinness, IGN, BuzzFeed, Time, Retro Gamer, Game Spot, Edge, etc.

From the time of its release in 1991 to the year 1993, the game bagged prizes like Game of the Year from Gamest Grand Prize in successive years of 1991 and 1992, from EGM in 1992, at Golden Joystick Awards in 1992, Game Informer Award in 1992, from Electronic Gaming Monthly in 1992 & 1993, 16-bit Game of the Year award in 1992 from GamePro in 1992, Gamest Grand Prize for Best Album, Best Characters, Best Direction in 1991, it also bragged Gamest Grand Prize for Best Album in 1992 and also a runner up-nomination for Best Graphics in 1991.

Electronic Gaming Monthly also called the game for the Best Gaming Ending in 1992 while Game Informer awarded it with Best Playability. MegaTech hailed the game in 1993 with the Hyper Game Award.

The game did go through some revamp, especially in the name of characters. The character Balrog who looked similar to Mike Tyson initially had a name M. Bison which was later changed to the world-renowned name Balrog due to the anxieties over likeness infringement issue. However, the M. Bison (short for Mike Bison) was retained when the game was distributed in Japan.
