A BRIEF STATISTICAL REPORT ON ARRESTS IN NEW JERSEY
In the state of New Jersey, criminal laws are very strict. And the fact that the law enforcement follows a zero tolerance policy makes it more efficient. Suspect of a crime or possibility of crime can lead to arrest in Jersey. The person though innocent can be detained if the police officers suspect a suspicion. Although the actual power rests with the judge who issues a warrant.
In New Jersey, the maximum number of offences are due to drug abuse violations, runaways and simple assaults among others. There were nearly 5000 arrests due to simple assault, nearly 9000 arrests for drug abuse and runaways account for more than 4500 offences. Though there weren’t many arrests for severe crimes like rape and man slaughter. As of 2013, the report shows that there were almost 75,000 arrests made due to severe offences.
The statistics also go on to show that in New Jersey the most offences are committed by people between the age 25 to 30 years. As of 2013, the total number of arrests were 371,404 out of which 43,385 arrests were due to first degree and certain second degree crimes. First degree crimes such as homicide, rape, and second degree crimes such as robbery, assault and others fall under the aforementioned provision. The rest 328,019 arrests were due to lesser crimes such as arson, forgery, fraud etc. Comparing these statistics to 2012’s we find that there was 3 percent decrease in severe crimes and a-third increased figure of 4 percent decrease for lesser crimes.
There was significant decrease in arrests for forgery, domestic violence, Driving Under the Influence NJ (DUI). While arrests for drug abuse violations and fraud increased. Among the total arrests 241,603 arrests were male out of which 17,941 were under the age of 18. The arrests of female offenders were 86,416. Both sexes show a decrease in total arrests when compared to the previous year. If categorised by race the number of white offenders were 194,316 while the number of blacks were 128,807. The rest 5076 offenders were divided among other races like Asian, American Indians and others.
The fall in arrests compared to the preceding year had affected all the categories. New Jersey is one of the safest states among all the 50 states in U.S.A. Crime rates have been lower than other states. That is because of superior law enforcements and of course good citizens.
