A Brief On Green Logistics And Importance In India

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi
Humans have yielded the advantages of technology and reached heights of technological achievements in a few years. Many resources are utilized for the same and more often than not the environment is ignored. As a result, humanity faces a monumental problem in the form of premature climatic shifts.

On the brighter side, countries are forming alliances to adopt environment-friendly practices to preserve the nature. As a result, Green Logistics companies in India and other developing nations become more than a requirement. This much is imperative to tackle the ever-increasing problem of global warming and logistics contributes a significant part to it.

How does Green Logistics work?

  • Packaging – packaging parcels and couriers use of a lot of materials and create tons of waste. By using eco-friendly reusable packaging materials, companies can not only preserve the environment but cut on costs as well.
  • Reciprocating – since packaging uses up a lot of paper and trees, companies take initiatives to plant trees.
  • Optimising the load – companies make it a point to send consignments when the trucks are fully loaded.
  • Optimising the routes – transport companies are required to scout the best possible route to cut the travel distance and time.
  • Methods of transportation – air travel, as it turns out, is the most harmful way of transportation and therefore, companies choose railroad travel whenever possible.

Protecting the Environment

To tackle the problems of wastage and preserving the environment, health, and space, companies are employing the increasing number of mobile logistic halls. These units can be re-used and easily transferred to other companies in case of downsizing or any other issues. Permanent structures cannot be moved or employed instantly unlike mobile halls.

The Indian logistics needs initiatives on the individual level, from businesses and public policy to implement green logistics. Since the vast population and the consequently high demand for products and services, it is imperative for countries like India to adopt sustainable logistics modules. The aforementioned levels are intertwined and influence each other. Minor enforcements are required on the part of the government, for obvious reasons. It boils down to the national policy and the relations with the MNCs that majorly drive such factors of Indian logistics.
