A Brief Description On Surgical Instruments

by Harry Jason Business

The perfect example of cutting instrument should be the scissors. Dissecting instruments are generally used to cut any structure or separate tissues. Dissectors can either be sharp or blunt. Scalpel is an ideal example of sharp dissector and it is used in cutting skin and other soft structures. Examples of blunt dissectors are back of knife handle, elevators and curettes. Forceps, tenacula and clamps are holding and grasping instruments. Probing instruments are generally used to enter the natural openings like the fistulas and the common bile duct. Dilating instruments are used to expand the size of any opening like the urethra or the cervical os. Retractors assist in clear visualization of the operative field and prevent trauma to other tissues. The suction devices remove fluid and blood from any surgical operative field.

Orthopedic Surgical Instruments should be counted approximately four times namely prior to the operation, before closing a cavity, before beginning of the wound closure and lastly at skin closure when the whole procedure is finished. It's pretty much important to count the numbers of the surgical instruments as there is a possibility of leaving any instruments inside the patient. Moreover, these instruments should be counted any time after surgical personnel are replaced during the operation.

There is a common issue with the Orthopedic Surgical Instrument as they are invariably misused and as a result cause alignment problem. All the instruments must be checked by the members of the surgical team frequently in order to ensure a smooth operative procedure. Scissors must be smooth and sharp and their edges must be checked carefully for nicks, chips or dents. After the operative procedure is done, the members who are assigned to the cleaning and packaging works must also recheck those instruments. If any impairment is found in those instruments, must be sent instantly for repair. An instrument can last as long as 10 years if proper care is taken off. But this all too depends on the sterilizing method used to disinfect the instruments and the manner in which those instruments are used.

There are so many sterilizing methods for surgical instruments like Eye Surgical Instruments like boiling, hot air oven, autoclaving and other gaseous disinfection methods. For sharp instruments autoclaving is the method of choice. In case of plastic material and other blunt instruments, hot air oven or other gaseous sterilization methods are used.
