Make Your Birthday Meaningful: Why Celebrating with Charity Matters
Hi everyone! It’s me again. I have a question for you: What is the best part of a birthday? Most kids my age would say it’s the giant chocolate cake, the colorful balloons, or the pile of presents wrapped in shiny paper. I used to think that too! Every year, I would make a list of the newest gadgets and toys I wanted. But this year, I started thinking about how many toys I already have that I don’t even play anymore. It made me feel a little bit weird inside, like I was missing the point of a "special" day.
My Mom told me that a birthday is actually a celebration of life. And if we are celebrating life, why not help someone else live a better one? That’s when we found out that you can Donate on Birthday occasions to help people who are having a really hard time. At first, I thought, "Wait, no presents for me?" But then I looked at the Akshaya Chaitanya website and saw pictures of kids who go to school in Mumbai. These kids are just like me—they like to play and learn—but many of them don't get a proper breakfast or lunch.
When you choose to Donate on Birthday events, you aren't just giving away money; you are sending a party to someone else! Akshaya Chaitanya has this amazing "Bal Shiksha Ahara" program. They prepare hot, nutritious meals in their giant kitchen and send them to municipal schools. Imagine being a student who is too hungry to focus on math, and then suddenly, a van arrives with hot nutritious & tasty food. That meal gives them the energy to study and the hope to dream big. Knowing that my birthday could be the reason a whole classroom of kids gets to eat makes me feel much happier than getting a new action figure ever could.
Setting it up was super easy because of the Online Donation feature. My parents didn't have to drive anywhere or carry heavy bags of grain. We just sat on the sofa with the laptop, clicked a few buttons, and it was done! I even asked my aunts and uncles that if they were planning to buy me a gift, they could just make an Online Donation to the NGO instead. They thought it was a "noble" idea, but I just think it’s fair. (How about adding that, donors get images & videos post their donation on request?)
Think about it this way: a toy might break in a week, but the nutrition from a healthy meal helps a child grow for a lifetime. When we use our special days to help others, our birthdays become "evergreen." They don't just end when the candles are blown out; the goodness stays in the world. I want to challenge (request) all my friends to try this. Even if you just give a little bit of your birthday money, it adds up to a lot of happy tummies. Let’s make our birthdays mean something more than just getting older—let’s make them about making the world a kinder place for everyone!
