Abstract

Due to increased prevalence of environmental pollution and unhygienic dietary habits the ratio of skin disease has also been raised to a great height. Every person desires to have a clear and healthy skin. We can decrease the onset of skin diseases by simply adding ayurveda in our daily life. In this article we will discuss about the herbal remedies available in our surrounding to stave off every skin ailment include dermatosis also.

Introduction

What is Dermatosis

  • The word dermatosis comprises a vast meaning it includes every skin disease that doesn't involve inflammation (skin becomes reddened and swollen as a result of injury to skin tissue).
  • There is formation of small lesions all over the different parts of the body such as over face, neck and limbs.

As per Ayurveda we correlate it with the “kushta roga

These verse states that-Seven prime things of our body are affected in kushta roga, known as “saptko dravya”. They are as follow:

Three dosha- vata, pitta and kapha

Four dushya( means important organs of our body)-Saptko dravya

  • Twak(skin tissue) means
  • Mamsa( muscle tissue)[7 THINGS]
  • Rakta(blood channels)
  • Lasika( fluid of our body)

These seven prime things are causative factors of seven types of kushta roga, and if not treated in the initial stage will afflict the whole body.

Causes

1. Ahaaraj nidan(Dietary cause)

  • If a person uses cold and hot food articles in a disorderly manner.
  • Intake madhu(honey), matsya(fish), lakuch( type of lemon), mulak(radish), kakmachi in an excessive amount.
  • Who consumes ‘chilichim’(type of fish) with milk.
  • Eat inferior food grains (such as hanyak, yavak, chinak, udalak and kordush) combined with milk, curd, buttermilk.
  • Over Intake of sneh( ghee, oil etc) rich diet.

2. Viharaj nidan( lifestyle related etiological factor)

  • After eating food in excess, who indulge in strenuous physical activities.
  • Sleep in the afternoon more than the required amount.
  • Suppresses the urges of urine and stool for longer duration.
  • After coming from intense sun exposure that drink cold water or take bath with cold water.

3. Other causes

  • When we suppress the natural urge of vomiting.
  • If we make fun of our elders, teachers and priests.
  • Because of the sins of previous birth( purva janam paap karma)
  • vanshanugat( Hereditary)
  • Rakta krimi( worm in the blood).

Prodromal Symptoms (Purvarupa)

It includes the complaints that patient suffers before the onset of main lakshan (means the sign/symptoms)

  • Ati svedan(Over Sweating)
  • Asvedan ( no sweating)
  • Twak parushay ( skin become hard and dry in texture)
  • Akasmat romharsh ( formation of Goosebumps in excess amount)
  • Vevarnay (discoloration of skin)
  • kandu( excessive itching)
  • suptata( numbness)
  • Sparsh gyan nash( loss of sensation)
  • Koth (formation of rashes)
  • Twak soth (skin inflammation)
  • Shram ( fatigue)
  • kalam( malaise)
  • Wounds took longer to heal properly.
  • Blackish appearance of blood.

Clinical features: prominent complaints with which patient present in front of the physician.

  • Itching
  • Numbness
  • Burning sensation
  • Lesion with pus discharge.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Excessive thirst.
  • Indigestion
  • Anorexia (loss of appetite).
  • Fatigue and malaise.

Diagnosis

  • Proper history taking.
  • Physical examination- by inspection, palpation and auscultation technique
  • Laboratory findings:
  • Complete blood count test.

As per ayurveda

  • Trividh pariksha( set of 3 examination)
  • Darshan( diagnosis is made by visual examination of the symptoms). In dermatosis patient present with formation of various type of lesions over the skin.
  • Sparshan( physician use tactile examination to evaluate whether skin is cold/hot.
  • Prashan( physician ask direct question form the patient about his diet and lifestyle variations that lead to formation of a malady.

Asthavidh pariksha( set of 8 examination procedure)

  • -Nadi pariksha- by palpating the pulse rate of the patient.
  • -Mutra pariksha- by examining the urine of the patient.
  • -Mal pariksha- by stool examination.
  • -Jivha pariksha- by examining the tongue whether coated or not.
  • -Shabad pariksha- by observing the natural sounds within the body like intestinal sound (peristalsis)
  • -Sparsh pariksha- by observing the patient skin texture whether it is cool, wet or dry.in psoriasis it is usually dry, rough in texture.
  • -Drik pariksha- when physician inspect patient symptoms through his/her eyes. In liver disease patient yellowish discoloration of skin (jaundice) is the prime finding.

Management

We will focus our treatment modality as per the ayurveda- as it deals with the patient by doing ‘Prakriti analysis’ and goes to the deep level of ‘Dosha-Dushya’[prime energies and organs of our body] involvement. So it takes out the impurities out from their base level.

1. Nidan parivarjan (means removing the cause of disease) - in this we try to avoid the etiological factors that contribute in sow the seed of ailment.

2. Sanshodhan chikitsa( detoxification procedure)-

In this complete Panchkarma therapies are involved. Such as

  1. Deepan- raising the power of digestive fire within the body by using deepan herbs like- Saunf(fennel)
  2. Paachan- in this we do digestion of undigested food present inside our alimentary tract with the oral intake of herbs like- Hingvashtak churan(1 tsf with lukewarm water twice daily).
  3. Snehan (Oiling/Massaging) - In this massage of body is done with slightly warm oil/ ghrit to smoothen the vitiated impurities (dosha)
  4. Svedan (Steaming procedure) - where fumigation of body is done with herbally made kwath to relax the blood chamnels inthe body
  5. Vaman (Emesis) - remove harmful toxins by using emetics technique. It shows best result in removing pacified kapha dosha from the body.
  6. Virechan (Purgation) - remove toxins through anal canal by purgation procedure.

1. Gandhak rasayan

  • INGREDIENTS: purified sulphur(gandhak)

Dosage: 1-2tablets twice daily with Luke warm water before or after meals.

2. Pitta balance

  • INGREDIENTS: Praval pishti( coral calcium), Akik pishti( agate calcium),Jawar mohra pishti, Kamdhudha ras, Giloy satva( extract of Tinospora cordifolia) etc.
  • Is an herbal blend of above mentioned ingredients and help in maintaining calcium level of our body, aid in reducing elevated pitta dosha which is the main culprit in generating every skin disease such as dermatosis.

Dosage: 1-2 capsules with plain water, once or twice a day, and 30 minutes after meals.

3. Manjistha capsule

  • INGREDIENTS: Manjistha( Rubia cordifolia)
  • Manjistha is best herb mentioned in our classical text that act as a very good rakta shodhak(blood purifying action) , so assist in  relieving dermatosis.

Dosage: 1-2 capsules twice times daily with plain water after meals.

4. Green Essential

  • INGREDIENTS:  Green tea (Camellia sinensis), Spirulina (Spirulina platensis), Amla( Emblica officinalis) etc.
  • All above mentioned herbs are very essential in detoxifying the blood, extracting out impurities from the blood, aid in lowering the bad cholesterol level within the body, increases turn over number of skin tissues so work very efficiently in dermatosis.

Dosage: 1-2 capsules with plain water, two times a day, after meals.

5. Navkarshik churana

  • INGREDIENTS: Daruhaldi, Giloy( Tinospora cordifolia), Katuki( Picorrhiza kurrora), Vacha ( sweet flag) etc.

Dosage: 1 teaspoonful of the churan two times daily, with plain water, after meals.
