Abstract

Nowadays different types of skin disorders are being seen in the general population with the increasing advancement of different cosmetic products which are being made up of chemicals that are not good for human skin. A painless coloured papules over the neck and face seen mostly in childrens is a viral infectious disease of skin known as Molluscum contagiosum infection. It is self limiting in nature but sometimes it doesn't resolve on its own and requires some good skin care and management. Here is a brief introduction of this disease with its  management.

Introduction

  • Molluscum contagiosum infection is seen in children with the age group of 1-10 years, in immunocompromised people, and also in people having a history of allergies. It gets cured by itself but sometimes it takes a longer duration for subsiding it's symptoms.
  • It's causative agent is Poxvirus (Molluscum contagiosum virus). It can be seen anywhere in the body as a papular eruption.
  • Ayurveda mentioned this disease in 'Kshudra roga' of Susrut Samhita Nidana Sthana 13/4 by the term 'Ajagallika'.
  • Kshudra roga is the term given to minor ailments which are smaller in nature.
  • 'Ajagallika' is seen in 'kapha' and 'vata pradhan' bodies in children. With symptoms of rashes which are smooth, small and are like the color of skin.

Causes

Poxvirus (Molluscum contagiosum virus) which is responsible for causing Molluscum contagiosum infection is contagious in nature as it spreads by direct contact with the infected person or using infected clothes like towels. It can also spread by having sexual contact with the infected person. By scratching also it can be spread.

The incubation period is from 14 days to 6 months.

Symptoms

  1. Small painless lesions
  2. Bumps appear single or in groups giving an appearance of patchy look.
  3. Shiny and smooth in nature
  4. Dent is seen in middle of bumps
  5. Coloured white or same as that of skin
  6. Benign self limiting in nature
  7. Itchy sometimes
  8. Size of bumps are from pinhead to a  Pencil eraser.

Location

Generally it is seen all over the body but sometimes seen on the neck, face, abdomen, armpits, legs, inner thigh but can't be seen on the soles of feet and palm of hand. It can be seen in the genital region then it is considered as a sexually transmitted infection.

Complications

If the lesions appear on the eyelids, conjunctiva then it makes it more hard to treat and with more severe symptoms.  The skin around the papules become inflamed and increase in size. This is considered as the immune response to the infection.

Investigation

Due it's distinct appearance as papules over skin it can be diagnosed easily but to rule out it with chicken pox, warts and skin cancer a skin biopsy can be done.

Management

If it doesn't self resolve then the treatment becomes necessary to accelerate the healing process, preventing its spread and for cosmetic reasons.
