Ayurvedic Overview On Osteoarthritis

According to Ayurveda, Osteoarthritis is correlated with Sandhigata vata. The term “Sandhivata” is derived from two words “Sandhi” means joints and “Vata” means dosha of the body. Here, vata dosha is imbalanced. It is a condition in which morbid vata is located in the joints and this vitiated vata causes sandhigata vata.  In Sandhigata vata, mostly weight bearing joints are affected more like knee joints, ankle joints etc. In this, mainly vata dosha gets vitiated and this vitiated vata disturbs the normal state of the kapha in all the joints  and due to the  vitiation of Vata dosha symptoms like joint pain and swelling occurs. Heaviness also occurs in the joints and Crepitations during walking is one of the main symptoms. This condition is affected by Vata prakopa (imbalance in the body) , Rakta dushya is involved in this condition. By taking ruksha aahar vihar (dry foods) , Rukshna guna of vata increases and Vatapurna druti sparsh (distension found in the joints) lakshna is produced.
