8 Things to Be Checked When Buying a Used Forklift

by Judi Booker Online Researcher
It is very easy to rush into buying a forklift for sale – especially if you are fighting against a tight deadline and need to be able to use this type of heavy machinery for a current or upcoming site project. To save money, you may even consider purchasing a used forklift instead of a new model. If that is the case, you should consider the 8 points outlined below before finalizing any purchase:

The Age of the Model

You may be investing your budget in an aged model that is on its last leg and possibly one project away from a complete breakdown. Therefore, you should pay close attention to its original manufacturing date/year to determine if it is a sufficient model to purchase.

The Manufacturer or Brand

In addition to the age of the model, you need to focus on the company that manufactured the forklift. Brand recognition speaks volumes, but a company’s overall track record is more important.

Research Competitive Pricing

Before you finalize your purchase, take the time to shop competitively for that specific model that you considered. You may be surprised at the savings you can obtain just by shopping around to multiple vendors and suppliers.

The Service History

Has the forklift been serviced before? Has it been involved in any type of on-site accident? Are there any model defects or operational issues on file for this specific model of which you need to be aware? These are all valid questions that need answers before you make any commitments.

The Previous Owner(s)

Who was/were the previous owner(s) of the forklift? When you find a used forklift for sale, it is imperative for you to take the time to identify who owned it previously, how it was cared for and the overall condition in which they kept it. Learning about the previous owner(s) will help you to understand the complete history of the forklift in question to ensure that you make a wise buying decision.

The Cosmetic Condition

How does the forklift look? Take the time to study its overall appearance and cosmetic condition. Examine its exterior and even the seating the same way you would a new vehicle that you buy from a dealer.

The Functional Condition

How does the forklift run? If possible, take the forklift for a test drive to make sure that its basic and advanced operational capabilities are intact. The last thing you want to do is find out that it malfunctions on-site after you have already purchased it.

Warranties and Service Agreements

What warranties, guarantees and other service agreements are in place to protect your investment after you have purchased it? It is wise to stay away from as-is offers, because you never know when they might backfire on you in the field.
