8 Steps To Take If Your Brakes Go Out!
by Lary Cook Sales ManagerThe worst nightmare for anyone who drives is the brakes not working, and it’s worse when you are driving at a high speed!
This is 99% a potential life-threatening situation.
And, everyone hopes to never go through a situation like this, but life is all about uncertainty, therefore, you should be prepared for it.
9 Steps To Take If Your Brakes Go Out!
1. Calm Yourself
Don’t get panic and get a hold of yourself.
Being calm will help you respond with better stimulus and you will be able to make a better judgment.
2. Decrease Your Speed
Keep your foot off the accelerator and downshift to lower gears to slow the car.
But, remember don’t downshift very quickly otherwise the car will skid.
3. Check Your Brakes
First and foremost you’ll need to check if something’s stuck underneath your brake pedal.
Kick any obstacle that you feel is in the pedal’s path.
If there’s nothing under the pedal and it goes down swiftly then you need to rebuild the braking pressure by pumping the brakes.
If your car has ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) instead of pumping the brakes, press them firmly otherwise the brakes will fail in case they already haven’t.
4. Alert Others On Road
You’ll have to do this as soon as you sense there’s something wrong.
Turn on the hazard lights and honk to alert other drivers/riders on the road.
They will give you space.
Also, ensure that you move to the left lane, so that you don’t bump into heavy traffic.
5. Emergency Brake
Once you find yourself in a non-traffic spot, use the emergency brake by slowly pulling it.
In case you pull it swiftly the rear wheels might get locked and you will lose control over your car.
6. Scrub Off Speed
If your emergency brake doesn’t work, use friction to reduce the speed.
Rub the wheels against a curb or gravel. In case you are on a highway steer your car from side to side however only if your speed it less.
7. Landing Spot
Make sure you find a soft landing spot for your car in case your car hasn’t slowed down.
You will have to crash your car and for that, you need to find a soft landing spot.
Don’t turn the engine off until you reach the spot otherwise it can lock the steering in place.
8. Call Roadside Assistance
Keep your hazard lights on and call a towing service and send it straight to a garage.
In case you have roadside assistance cover on your car insurance policy make sure to use it.
This will help you incur the cost for the assistance.
