Diagnosing Your Brakes

by Adam Perry Content Editor

When is it time to change your brakes? That's a question best left to the professional technicians at your local Newark auto service center during your annual brake checkups. However, there are a few things you can keep an eye out for. Look for these telltale signs of brake faulure. Catching a problem early is often the difference between a long and costly job and a quick fix. Always remember that experienced technicians are your best resources for any brake-related questions, so don't be afraid to ask for clarifications on any of the issues listed below.

Noises

Brakes shouldn't be noisy, generally speaking. Sometimes brand-new brakes will squeal for a few miles, depending on what type and grade of pads or rotors you had installed. Higher-quality components tend to have less annoying noise than basic options, a benefit which comes as an added bonus to their improved lifespan and grip. If you're consistently experiencing high-pitched noises on older brakes, this is a sign you need to bring your car in for service. Other warning sounds include clunking, grinding and rumbling sounds. Pay special attention to when the sound occurs. Does it happen when you turn the wheel, when you apply pressure to the brake pedal or during acceleration? This is important information for your Newark auto service technician.

Leaks

Just like strange noises, strange fluids coming from your car are almost universally bad. With the exception of rainwater, melting ice and spilled coffee, nothing should be dripping from your car. If you see liquid around your wheels, it's time to get your brakes checked. In fact, any type of drip should be investigated by a trained eye as soon as possible to prevent costly complications to what otherwishe might be a simple fix. The same goes for fluids that mysteriously dissappear. Even without visible drips, leaks might be draining your fluids and, in the process, causing uneccessarywear on important systems. If you're going through more fluid than normal, it's time to get your system inspected and fixed.

Noisy brakes and mysterious leaks are two of the most common symptoms of system failure. In fact, these symptoms are often a sign that you have some relatively advanced problems. With that in mind, it's important to bring your vehicle in to a full service shop as soon as you notice any of these issues. Alternatively, set up a routine maintenance schedule to keep everything working smoothly: that way you have the lowest cost and least downtime.
