As the weather gets warmer, it is inevitable that riders in Utah and across the nation are going to dust off their bikes and start hitting the open road. If seeing these free-spirited road warriors has inspired you to purchase a motorcycle of your own, there are various factors to consider ensuring your safety as a new rider.

Often times, distracted drivers are the roots of motorcycle accidents in Utah, not the riders themselves. Understanding practical equipment, how to stay alert and how be seen are some of the most important elements of being a safe rider.

Below are eight tips for new riders.

Find A Bike That Fits

Finding a motorcycle that fits is similar to finding a bicycle that fits. For ultimate safety, make sure your feet can rest flat on the ground while sitting, as well as reach the controls with ease.

Engine Size

Deciding what type of riding you will be doing will determine the size of engine you will want. For a starter or a commuter bike, engines as small as 125 to 250 cc’s can be just fine. For highway riding, consider a bike with a 500 to 750 cc engine to safely keep up with traffic.

Street Legal

Many motorcycles, specifically custom bikes, neglect many features that qualify them for street legality. While ridding mirrors, blinkers and front brakes can be visually appealing to some, many motorcycle accidents could have been avoided with these stock safety features.

Helmets

Helmets come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Full-face helmets are the most effective, but can be unappealing to some. Find something that is comfortable so you will wear it for each ride.

Attire

Brightly colored and full-length clothing is ideal for riding. Leather has also proven to be protective in the event of motorcycle accidents.

Avoid Impaired Riding

Motorcycle riders are 30 percent more likely to die in an accident than drivers. Adding drugs or alcohol increases that percentage significantly.

Be Defensive

Cars are at fault for nearly 60 percent of accidents involving cars and motorcycles. Be defensive, and stay alert.

Inspect Bike

Prior to any ride, no matter how short, riders should check their brakes, fuel, mirrors and blinkers.
