Not many people give much thought to their plumbing system, until something goes wrong. Good plumbing habits however, along with a sensible maintenance plan, can save you a lot of money both today and in the future.

The key to a long lasting and efficient plumbing system, that doesn't keep breaking down all the time, is to have a good plumbing system installed right at the start, and then keep up with a regular maintenance plan. So if your plumbing isn’t up to scratch, here are 7 easy plumbing tips that should bring you back on track.

1. Schedule a check-up: No-one likes to spend money unnecessarily, but spending money today can save you much more money in the future. So find out the state of your plumbing today and head off any small problems that could get out of control in the future, if they are ignored. We recommend Red Dog Plumbing and Quicksure Plumbing who have both been a saviour to our pipes in the past!

2. Forget DIY: Unless you are an experienced plumber, DIY fixes can cause more harm than good. A plumber will complete your repairs quickly and efficiently and they will be done right, first time.

3. Don't clog your drains: Make sure that you dispose of all food scraps, oil and paint in the right receptacles and don’t pour them down the drain. Using your drains and sinks as a trash can is a guaranteed way to cause expensive blockages, which is something you want to avoid.

4. Love your toilet: The easiest way to ramp up your plumbing bills is to block your toilet with feminine products and personal hygiene wipes. Make sure that these items are disposed of safely and hygienically, but not down the toilet. If you keep the toilet lid and the bathroom door closed as well, this might also help to prevent young children dropping toys, shoes and other interesting items into the toilet.

5. Replace outdated fixtures: Taps and shower heads can easily be replaced with more water efficient fixtures, which will not only help to increase the appeal of your home (and its value), but also help to cut down on any maintenance problems in the future.

6. Reduce the pressure: This is one trick that can extend the life of your plumbing system. Ask your plumber to test the water pressure in your plumbing outlets and if a small reduction is warranted (you might need to fit a pressure reducer), this can easily decrease the stress on your water pipes and valves, saving you money in the long term.

7. Soften your water: A high mineral content in your water supply can reduce the life of your plumbing system and cost you more in repairs. High mineral deposits can corrode your pipes, joints and fittings and a sure sign of this is a white build-up on your shower heads and taps.  Talk to your plumber about installing a water softener and save money on repairs in the future.

There is no substitute for a well-designed and maintained plumbing system. You will find that it is much more cost effective to maintain a good quality plumbing system, than try to keep an outdated and poorly designed one hobbling along.
