Our Rath Yatra

The famous, most awaited festival, Rath Yatra or Car Festival will commences on the 25th June, 2017 ( Sunday) & and Return Car Festival or ' Bahuda Yatra will commence on 3rd July, 2017 ( Monday) of this year. It is known as Chariot Festival or Car festival called Ghosha Yatra, this is one of the most awaited festivals. The celebration of this day starts much earlier on the day of Akshay Trutiya. In Shri Jagannath Mandir , Thyagraj Nagar. In Shri Jagannath Mandir & OACC does only one Rath / Chariot of 22 feet height and well decorated are pulled by strings. The Rath / Chariot is decorated by numerous classical art and designs. The chariots are decorated with various designs and colors by the artists that showcase their enthusiasm for the Yatra. They keep ready the richly decorated chariots. Which resembles temple structures for pulling?



On the full moon day, last day of the month of Jyestha, (Jyestha Purnima). Lord Jagannath along with Brother Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Sudarshan Maharaj come out of the temple to take bath and give darshan to all of his devotees. This is also known as Snana Purnima - Holy bathing festivals with daily rituals before the devotees. The Deities takesbath with 108 pitchers of sacred water which is called Maha Snan. After this the priest ( Pujak) start doing  Gajanana Besh. The Vesha would start from afternoon and continue till night. Later, the deities would be shifted to Anasara Ghar (sick chamber) as they had fallen “sick” after taking bath. From Snan Purnima till Navyoban Darshan , there is a gap of 15 days , where the Priest does all the Gupt Sevas to cure the Deities. Bishakarma- the ritual carpenter does their coloring. The main door (Dwara) of the temple will open for the devotees to do the Navyovan Darshan.

After the following day the famous Rath Yatra will commence. It is celebrated usually in the month of June or July commences when Lord Jagannath accompanied by his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra are brought out from the Garbhgruha (Main Temple) to the street where the decorative Rath is kep with wooden horses ( Ashwa) and Charioteer (Sarathi ), who will take Them to Shri Gundicha Temple to their aunt’s house. Around 11am we start the Pahandi. The Pujaks and Devotees bring all Deities with lots of devotional sounds and Kirtan Mandali. Mandir premises are echoed with entire Hari Naam and Haribol.

Chhera Pahnara is the most famous ritual done by is so called king, during the festival the king sweeps all around the deities and chariots. Then he cleanses the road with a broom (gold-handled) and sprinkles sandalwood water like an ordinary man. The custom showcases that in the eyes of Lord Jagannath every devotee is equal be it the king or a commoner.

After the Rituals done at Rath, The devotees start pulling the Chariot in the main street, covering the areas like Thaygraj Stadium, Shri Jagannath Marg, Safdarjung Bus Terminal, INA Market, Vikas Sadan area with huge crowd. The huge processions accompanying with devotional songs with drums, tambourines, trumpets, Jhanja, Mrudanga etc and will come back to our own temple. All Deities are worshiped on the Chariot only. Next day evening again the Pahandi starts from Rath to Shri Gundicha Ghar, which is in our Mandir Premises only.

At the Gundicha Temple, the deities stay for a period of nine days and enjoy their vacations at their aunt’s house and have fun all the while offered sweet pancakes or Podapitha. After nine days again the Rath / Chariot will pull to celebrate the return of the deities to Shri Mandir, called Bahuda Yatra.
