Let's face it, everyone dreads hearing the words “we have a training session coming up and you are going.” The time it takes to travel to and from the training site, the sitting in a cold and boring room have never been any fun. You company has taken care of one serious complaint; traveling has been eliminated by renting a training room in Singapore. The rest is up to you, as the facilitator of the training to engage employees in a teacher/student approach that will assist the employee in leaving with all information intact and understood. The goal is to make training fun and entertaining. These five ways may make the approach much more successful.

Break the Ice-

Before even starting material, there needs to be a way to break the ice and release tension in the room. There are some that are not familiar with each other, that may not like each other or that have other unknown issues with each other. By breaking the ice, you are effectively getting everyone to talk and listen to each other.  Breaking the Ice could be something as simple as:

If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would it be? – It creates a thought provoking and a deeper meaning to not only the people in the room but also to the mood of the environment. It is a calming question that opens everyone up to each other.

Games-

Preparing games that build on the trust and participation of team members can increase entertainment as well as engagement. Working together will often create a better environment than everyone sitting in rows and separated by seats and forward facing heads.

Voting on correct answers –

A simple yet effective game where everyone stays seated and holds up coloured cards that have letters that correspond to the correct answers to course material questions makes sure that everyone can be just a little more motivated with friendly competition.

Understand how people learn-
Not everyone learns in the same style. Prepare and present the materials in multiple styles such as visual, auditory, kinesthetic or cognitive. While speaking, you may have pictures or other material to aide lessons that will assist the whole class.

Provide Breaks –
Schedule enough breaks to provide employees with ample time to use restrooms, stretch their legs, get fresh air and more. Sitting for more than an hour is difficult and the material becomes lost in the foggy brain.

Break off into groups –
After the ice breaking session, break the room off into groups. Try to make sure that you separate friends or ones who automatically chose to sit together. The whole idea is to get to know and work with others. In these groups, they will get to know the other person(s) and trust each other in the exercise.

There is no facilitator that is going to be 100% right all the time. Changing the routine up and trying new techniques is necessary as time and material change. The basic idea is to engage employees in active participation so that the material is retained to the highest degree. The last thing a facilitator needs to remember is to always clean up the training room rental in Singapore so the next person doesn't have to. Stay true to your mission and stay true to yourself.
