5 things to consider before replacing the windows on your home

by Groshan Fabiola I try to cover as many topics as I can

Replacing the windows can provide you and your family many advantages. Examples include but are not limited to a reduction in heating costs, decrease in drafts, increased energy efficiency, and elimination of maintenance. However, it is a significant chore and you will want to make sure you are making the right investment. If you are just starting the process, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind.

1.      What kind of window frame you want

When you are purchasing new or replacement windows, frames are the most important factor to take into account. Why? Because frames are vitally important in holding the window in place and ensuring that energy efficiency is suitable. To put it simply, frames are the structural backbone of the window. Choose the window frames that work best for your DIY project. There are several options, as follows:

  • uPVC – This unplasticised form of PVC is very popular in Europe, mainly in the United Kingdom. uPVC has exceptional insulation abilities and provides great security for the home. It is the best material for window frames, as it is highly durable and long-lasting.
  • Aluminium – Aluminium can easily be manipulated, so it is a great option for homes with unusually shaped windows. Aluminium window frames are very strong, but they allow more space for glazing. In terms of energy efficiency, it is not the best option.
  • Wood – Wooden window frames are just as sturdy and durable as other types, but they are pretty expensive. You will be investing in frames that will last a long, long time, yet you have to dig deep into your pockets. Good-quality frames can last a century.

2.      Window glazing: single or double-glazed?

Glazing a window is commonly carried out to enhance the energy efficiency of the home. Double and even triple glazing is now used in homes. Given that the average household loses 10 per cent of its heat through windows, it is no wonder that people opt for glazed windows. Speaking of which, you have to decide from the get-go if you want single glazing or double glazing.

Needless to say, single glazed windows are not very efficient. They are made up of a single pane of glass. Single glazed windows rarely require new frames. What is more, they are suitable for top climates. Double glazed windows, on the other hand, consist of 2 glass panes and offer an additional level of insulation. Consider investing in top quality uPVC double glazed windows. Depending on the supplier, you may have the option to select the type of glass you like, which can range from low emissions glass to glass that lets in more sunlight.

3.      Think if you need a full replacement

Double glazed windows can last for hundreds of years. Maybe so, but they cannot last forever. If your home was built before 1960 and it has the original windows, it is a good idea to have them replaced altogether. The contractor will install a new window unit and insulate all the gaps. There is one other option, though. The contractor can install a window insert, which is a small unit. It is not necessary to remove the existing trim, not to mention that you can save in terms of labour costs. Unfortunately, it is impossible to insulate the air gaps that tend to form around the window openings.

4.      Selecting the window colour

With wood windows, you have the chance to choose any kind of colour. The right hue will make the wall pop. What if you are planning to install uPVC windows? Well, there are numerous colour options to suit the home’s décor. Double glazing products, for instance, are available in a great variety of colours, from classic white to red and black. You are getting new windows, which have the power to transform the look or the feel of the home. What colour will it be?

Decide first if you want a traditional style or a modern one. If casual and classic are on your mind, choose hues like red, brown, orange, and yellow. Perhaps you are looking to achieve a modern home décor. If this is the case, the colours you should be focusing your attention on are grey, purple, green, and blue. Make the necessary stylistic considerations and choose a colour that will not fade.

5.      Finding the best window supplier

Do you want to get the most out of your home renovation project? If yes, make sure that you find the best window supplier. Contrary to popular belief, selecting the right supplier is not easy. What you need is a team that you can put your faith in and deliver your vision for the project. Look for suppliers that have been in the industry for some time. They will not go out of business anytime soon.

Additionally, get an idea of where the windows come from. Does the company manufacture them or does it purchase windows from a third-party supplier? If the products are made locally, that is great. You can receive detailed information about energy efficiency, glazing, and so on and so forth. Find the right window supplier and you will get the best windows there are.
