4 DIY HVAC Maintenance Tips

by Kevin Smith Author

It’s estimated that the average American household spends over $2,200 per year on energy. With over half of this amount being used for heating and cooling costs, it’s more important than ever to keep your system running efficiently. The easiest way to improve efficiency and ensure the longevity of your HVAC system is through regular maintenance. To keeping your heater and air conditioner and Marietta working properly, here are a few things to remember.

Replace Your Filters

The air filter on your HVAC is responsible for filtering the outside air before it’s cycled throughout your entire home. By removing allergens, dust, and debris, it keeps your family healthier and improves your air quality. Depending on how often you operate your HVAC, you may need to replace your air filter each month. If you forget or neglect this part of your maintenance, it will cause your system to work overtime to heat and cool your home. This could result in premature part burnout and a higher energy bill.

Keep Things Clean

Every so often, it’s important to inspect the interior unit of your HVAC. Of course, this inspection should only be done once you’ve cut off electricity to the appliance. Once there’s no power running to your HVAC, carefully examine the components of your machine. Carefully clean and dust all of the parts, paying special attention to the fan and motor. Keeping your appliance dust free prevents damage from occurring and reduces noise.

Look for Leaks

It’s normal for your HVAC to use a tube to remove any condensation from the appliance, but there should never be pooling water around your unit. If you notice any sort of unusual leaks, call a professional immediately. The leak could be refrigerant, which is toxic to humans. To keep your family healthy, avoid the area and only allow an HVAC expert to handle the issue.

Keep Your Unit Clear

Your outside unit deserves the same type of care and maintenance as the interior unit. It’s important to keep your outside box clear of debris and branches. Avoid planting flowers and trees too close to the unit as they may overgrow the appliance. Be sure to walk the perimeter of your exterior unit often to determine whether or not any debris needs to be dislodged. Dust, leaves, and dirt can affect the efficiency of the exterior unit, causing your HVAC to overheat.

If you notice anything unusual happening with your heating and air conditioner in Marietta, don’t handle the repair yourself. Instead, consult with an expert to ensure that it’s handled properly.
