4 Common Roofing Shingles

by Kevin Smith Author

Shingles serve multiple purposes for your roof, adding a decorative aspect and a protective layer. Unless you have a flat roof, part of it is visible so you want it to match the rest of the house. You can choose from a variety of styles and colors to ensure that your roof improves the look of your home rather than being an eyesore. Shingles also add a protective layer on top of the plywood and sheath underneath. It keeps the roof protected from the rain, wind, and heat that naturally impact the building. Here are four common types of roofing shingles in Buckhead.

Asphalt Shingles

Among the most popular and affordable shingles is asphalt. These types of shingles come in many different sizes, colors, and styles with the ability to mimic the look of weathered wood, backwoods, slate, and charcoal. The ability to match with a variety of home styles and the price make them very popular. However, they don’t hold up well when the temperature changes quickly, often cracking as they are made of a weaker material.

Fiberglass Shingles

Fiberglass shingles are stronger than asphalt, made from a fiberglass base mat. They are layered, making them waterproof and resistant to fire. While they are a little more expensive than asphalt, fiberglass shingles are a common choice due to its lighter weight and durability.

Tile Shingles

One of the more expensive types of shingles is made of tile. A more stylish option, it can be made in lighter colors which will keep the roof cool when the sun beats down on it. Stylistically, these shingles are the best match with homes featuring a Spanish or Mediterranean look. Tile shingles can suffer from leaks, small cracks or holes, and cracked or broken tiles, but are easier to fix than many other materials, allowing owners to avoid replacement.

Wood Shingles

The most environmentally-friendly option of shingle is wood. This energy-efficient material is commonly available in either cedar or redwood. Being made of wood, they are more likely to catch fire or attract termites than others, but preventative measures can be taken to lessen these risks. Mold and mildew commonly build up on wood shingles but they can usually be washed off with relative ease. Unlike tile, wood shingles are not as easy to fix so they may need to be replaced when damaged.

The first layer of defense for your roof is the shingles, which also serve as a decorative feature. While you may desire a certain style, it’s also important to take into account the deficiencies of each material. These are four of the most popular types of roofing shingles in Buckhead.
