4 Common Myths About Snoring Mouthpieces

by Usman Raza Good things come when we wait for them

Yes, yes, your snoring partner is keeping you up at night. That is why you opted for a snoring mouthpiece. But now, you are hesitant because of certain myths you have come across with.

Okay, fret not. We are here to discuss nothing but mere facts.

1. Snoring devices like mouthpieces stain the teeth.

Many people are hesitant about using a snoring mouthpiece because they heard it stains those pearly white teeth. Well, don’t believe that. According to experts, it does not cause stain in your teeth. It only causes issues when not cleaned properly.

After every use, make it a habit to wash it and let it air dry. Also, be sure your teeth are brushed or flossed before putting it on at night. Once every six months, have a professional check and clean your mouthpiece.

2. Snoring devices cause the teeth to move.

Again, this is another myth that should be busted. Some people fear wearing a mouthpiece, thinking it can cause their teeth to move. In some cases, it could be true. But most likely, it depends on the situation.

There are patients who have experienced temporary changes in their bite whenever the device is removed. That is nothing to be scared of because most offices offer a customized repositioning of the device for daily use. Because of that, the bite should return to its original state.

However, in the case where the bite does not go back to what it is supposed to be, there are still options. For instance, if the bite change is already permanent, but does not affect one’s daily routine, a patient may prefer not to do anything with it. Otherwise, he is advised to undergo restorative dental treatment to regain full teeth contact.

3. Snoring mouthpieces can be DIY.

Of course, a snoring mouthpiece should be created by experts. Nobody else. No matter how much you want to save money, you should only ask a professional to make your device, unless you want to suffer the consequences.

If a snoring mouthpiece is custom-made, then rest assured that it will be very comfortable and effective, putting an end to snoring in an instant. Then again, if it is just DIY, expect complications like tooth movement. And if that happens, you may end spending a lot of money for restorative dental work.

4. Snoring mouthpieces are not necessary.

Nowadays, many patients don’t see their snoring as a serious problem. They do not know that their snoring could already be a symptom of a bigger health issue.

If your partner defends that it is normal for him to snore because he is tired, that might not be usually the case. He should be tested for sleep apnea. Once diagnosed with having it, he will be asked to use a snoring device like a mouthpiece.

Now that you know the truth behind the common myths, it’s time that you do something about it. Once you notice that snoring is becoming an issue, start consulting a professional. Stained teeth, tooth movement, and other concerns won’t be a problem as long as you work with professionals. Just let them perform a check and you’ll get the right snoring device suited for you.
