3 Major Conditions That Happen Due to Hormonal Imbalances in Women

by Ankit Sharma Women's Clinic
It is not wrong to say that hormones rule a human body. In women, progesterone and estrogen are two hormones responsible for reproductive health. Other hormones affect her overall health, moods, weight, energy levels, and more.

Here are short glimpses of major and commonest conditions that happen due to hormonal imbalances. You may need to visit a good gyne to check your hormone levels and diagnose and treat the conditions.

1. PCOS – Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome:
PCOS happens when a female body produces abnormally high levels of androgen, which is a male hormone. This leads to the formation of clusters of tiny fluid-filled cysts in ovaries. They contain immature eggs.

Symptoms include hirsutism (excessive hair on the body), infertility, severe acne and skin problems, weight problems, irregular menstruation, and thinning hair. It may further lead to heart problems and diabetes.

A good women gynecologist will conduct a pelvic examination, blood tests, and ultrasound to diagnose PCOS.

2. Menopause
Menopause is the end of menstruation. This is a normal biological process. It generally happens between 45 and 55 years of age. With age, levels of progesterone and estrogen hormones dip. Egg production in the ovaries stops.

Symptoms of menopause differ in women. It is like pregnancy – unique to each woman. Some sail smoothly through menopause, while some experience slight symptoms. Others may get severe symptoms. The common ones are mood swings, irritability, sadness, frustrated feeling, hot flushes, changes in hair and skin, low sex drive, difficult to sleep at night, achy and stiff joints, and more.

There is no treatment for this, as this is no disorder. It is just a biological process that a woman goes through. You can visit a gyne for a consultation on how to subside your symptoms. She may give you tips on how to manage mood swings and live a quality, happy life after menopause.

3. Thyroid disorder:
Thyroid gland lies in the front area of the neck. The gland secrets two hormones, tri-iodothyronine and thyroxine. They regulate vital growth and development processes, energy use, and more.

When the gland becomes under active, hypothyroidism occurs, which indicates inadequate secretion of the two hormones. This brings a wide range of symptoms, including depression, pale skin, weight changes, fatigue, brittle hair and nails, constipation, changes in periods, cold sensitivity, and more.

When the gland becomes overactive, hyperthyroidism occurs, which indicates an abnormally high levels of the two hormones. This, again, brings a set of symptoms, including changes in periods, bulging eyes, weakness and trembling of muscles, weight loss, insomnia, diarrhea, irritable nature, anxiety, heat sensitivity, and more.

Hormones and mental health
Hormones create a tremendous impact on the mood. So, an imbalance can create mood swings, concentration problems, memory fogging, and others. Hormones play a vital role in metabolism, sleep patterns, appetite, energy usage in the body, and functions of vital organs.

Stress and certain medication are also culprits for hormonal imbalances.

Talk to a good women gynecologist, if you experience prolonged sadness and irritability for no obvious reason. It could be your hormones.
