Distribution power transformer is used all around when stepping down the voltage to our usable levels. Read our full article to know more about Distribution Power Transformers.

Distribution power transformers are the last stage of power transformation in our power distribution circuit. The electrical cables generally have electric current flowing at thousands of volts and the distribution transformer steps down this voltage so that the electricity users can use power at their desired voltage levels.

There are various kinds of distribution transformers available in the market, and they differ on the basis of their assembly and installation. There are three broad categories in which the distribution transformers are divided and these categories are defined below.

Classes of Distribution Transformers

1)    Mounting Location

•    Pole: A distribution transformer that you generally see mounted to the electricity pole is called a pole distribution transformer. This transformer is responsible for the stepping down of voltage and distribution of electric current in a local society.

•    Pad: If a distribution transformer is mounted on a concrete pad and buried underground this type of transformer is called a pad mount distribution transformer. They are generally used at places that have underground electrical wiring.

•    Underground Vault: Underground vault distribution transformers are generally buried underground inside steel vaults. These transformers are used in an area where the installation location of the transformer is either submerged into water or if the underground moisture level is so high that a vault is an absolute necessity to protect the transformer.

2)    Type of Insulation:

•    Waterproof: If the location of the assembly of the transformer is such that the transformer will be placed submerged in water then a waterproof or water insulated transformer is used in such circumstances. Typically a vault transformer is used in such situations.

•    Dry: If a transformer is not submerged under water, then it is a dry transformer. Every transformer that we see in our day to day life is mostly a dry transformer such as the one hanging on the electrical pole in front of your house.

3)   Number of Phases:

  • Single Phase Transformer: A single phase transformer consists of three wires out of which only one wire supplies power while others are neutral and earthing wires. These transformers are used in households for giving appropriate power and voltage to the appliances.

  • Three Phase Transformer: Unlike single phase ones, three phase ones have 5 wires out of which three supply power while the other two are neutral and earthing wires. They are used in industries for providing power and voltage to powerful industrial tools and machines.

While Constant voltage transformers can be procured from any of the good electrical stores near your area, three-phase transformers are available with big manufacturers and distributors. They are also being shipped online.

Servokon Systems is one of the biggest manufacturers and suppliers of transformers in India and has been known for the quality of products they deliver making them one of the most sought after brands.
