1. The legend of Demon “Vala”
The presence of many of the gemstones on the Indian sub-continent is attributed to the Ancient mythical demon “Vala”. The story of demon Vala becoming a “source” of gemstones goes something like this. Back in the days when gods and demi-gods ruled and roamed Earth, Vala was a powerful demon. Such was his power, that he fought and won the throne of heavens, previously ruled by Indra; the ruler of heavenin Indian Mythology. To get his throne back, Indra, along with other gods, plotted against Vala, and called him for a rite. Once at the venue, Vala was captured, treacherously, by the other gods, and then chopped to death. But as the demon had died on a pure and religious alter, he too became god-like, and his chopped body parts soon turned into gemstones.

2. The Silver Deer and the Lost Cat
The tale of the “Silver Hoof” was given by Pavel Bazhov. He was a Russian writer who compiled many of the local stories for his collection of fairy tales, that was was published in the year 1939. In the story, there is a deer with a silver hoof. And every time he stomped his foot, out came a gemstone from the ground. In the very same forest as his lived an old man, a hunter, along with his adopted orphan daughter Daryonka. Daryonka had a cat, named Muryonka, that she would play with all day long. One day, when the old man was out in the wild, and the girl was all alone with her cat, silver hoof came at their place. He talks with Muryonka, and they both start having the time of their lifetime. While they are playing, silver hoof stomps many times, producing hoards and hoards of rubies, emeralds, sapphires, rainbow moonstone beads, and other gemstones. Soon the hunter arrives, only to find his daughter sleeping all alone. Hoofs is all gone till now, taking away Muryonka with him too. The hunter and little girl become rich but at the cost fo their cat. The story tells that luxury comes at a cost, which they both had to pay.
