Okay I was a pushover
I'm going to share a little story about marketing techniques. Sad to admit it but I was a pushover for good marketing twice in one day, within a distance of about 10 yards.
I wen to a training a couple of weeks ago and some of us got together afterwards to grab a bite. We ended up going to the mall since malls have food courts and food courts have a variety of choices. Yes I got suckered twice in the food court!
Sucker situation Number one was The little greek place that was handing out samples of their lamb Gyros. I am so not a fan of Greek food but hey that lamb was good. So good in fact the got got five orders for Lamb gyros as we all ended up ordering the same thing! Did I mention that Lamb was good?
Sucker situation two was actually the exposure game. We were walking along int he direction of the greek shop when we were greeted by a big walking ice cream cone. Very friendly Ice cream cone who made it a point to say hello to everyone and spare a few extra moments on the kiddies.
As we walked back with our food we got a friendly reminder not to forget dessert! That was one busy ice cream cone walking around saying hello. And yes I remembered dessert a chocolate dipped waffle cone full of chocolate ice cream.
So why did I get suckered like that?
The first guy worked the free sample angle. He was giving samples that were not only free, they were tasty. He was giving something of value to make me want more. Too often what marketers are offering for free has no value and they wonder why it doesn't work.
The Second guy in the Ice cream cone suit worked the exposure angle. He made it a point to speak to everyone who went by and then put an extra effort on those who had responded favorably to him. Yes he reminded me about that ice cream, told me not to forget dessert and even gave me a high five on the way by. To often marketers do not understand the concept of exposure. You do not just throw a link in someone's face and expect them to buy, you build a relationship with your prospect which is exactly what Mr Ice Cream Cone was doing.
The really strange part in all of this? these two establishments employing these two guys had the longest lines and people were patiently waiting in those lines. I was watching techniques that worked. I think more internet marketers need to spend a little time in the real world to see how it's really done.

The two biggest mistakes I see are freebies that are worth the price (nothing), and those constant links being thrown around as 'exposure'.
Had the samples not been of good quality no one would have been waiting to get those Gyros and had the ice cream cone just stood there saying "buy ice cream", no one would have bought any.

A study of psychological behavior is essential in marketing. When it comes to internet marketing, what people buy on the net is a different type of study to be taken up by analyzing the reasons and situations that prompt such a behavior. Nice article, Cheryl.
