In written sources, Zagreb is mentioned for the first time in 1094 when the Diocese of Zagreb was founded. 150 years later by the charter of “Golden bull" Zagreb was proclaimed as the first Free Town of the Kingdom. In 1577 Zagreb was first mentioned as the capital. In 1669 the Jesuits founded the first high school and academy, and that year is taken as the foundation year of the Zagreb’s University.
In 1776 the seat of the Croatian Royal Council – the Government was moved from Varaždin to Zagreb.
