Zagreb is situated in the central Croatia beneath the slopes of the Medvednica mountain, and split in two parts by the river Sava.
In written sources, Zagreb is mentioned for the first time in 1094 when the Diocese of Zagreb was founded. 150 years later by the charter of ?Golden bull" Zagreb was proclaimed as the first Free Town of the Kingdom. In 1577 Zagreb was first mentioned as the capital. In 1669 the Jesuits founded the first high school and academy, and that year is taken as the foundation year of the Zagreb?s University.
In 1776 the seat of the Croatian Royal Council ? the Government was moved from Vara?din to Zagreb.
Zagreb is an old medieval central European town. It has been developing culturally, scientifically, and economically for centuries. It is located on an intersection of important roads between Adriatic coast and Central Europe.
When in 1991 Croatian people proclaimed its sovereignty, Zagreb became the capital, and political and administrative centre of the Republic of Croatia. Zagreb is also a business centre, university centre, cultural centre, and arts and entertainment centre. Many renown artists, scientists and sportsman come from Zagreb and work in it. Zagreb has a baroque atmosphere of the Gornji grad, picturesque open markets, various shops, small craftsmen's products and delicious home cuisine. It is a town of green parks and promenades, surrounded by beautiful picnic sites. Zagreb enters the third millennium with a million inhabitants. In spite of rapid development of economy and traffic, the city preserved its peculiar beauty and casual spirit and makes it a living place tailored to a man's needs.
