Money can't buy happiness, but....

That has to be one of the most well known sayings that there is "Money can't buy you happiness." But as my mom used to say "It sure can make you comfortable in your misery."

Everyone works to make money from the Big business owner right down to the janitor swinging swinging a mop or the short order cook flipping burgers.  We all are chasing after money.  The question we need to ask ourselves is "Why?"

It's simple we need money to pay for the things that make us 'comfortable'.  For some people being comfortable in their misery is enough.  As long as they have enough money to keep a decent roof over their heads and food in their stomachs, they are content.  But some people like Me and more than likely you want more.

If you want the money, you want the wrong thing.  A lot of people get caught up in the chase always wanting more money and that's when you get the misery.  Odd coincidence but have you ever noticed that Misery is really just Miser with an extra letter.  Think about the most well known miser in history old Ebeneezer Scrooge.  How happy was he chasing coins and pinching pennies?  When did he really find some joy in his heart?  Unless I'm remembering A Christmas Carol wrong it was after he realized that money was really nothing until you put it to use.

If you want the money you can't chase it for the sake of money.  You need a reason to chase it, the money should be the tool to getting your why.

I'll leave you with a little story by Aesop called The Miser:

The Miser

A MISER sold all that he had and bought a lump of gold, which he
buried in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and
went to look at daily. One of his workmen observed his frequent
visits to the spot and decided to watch his movements. He soon
discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down,
came to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his next
visit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to
make loud lamentations. A neighbor, seeing him overcome with
grief and learning the cause, said, "Pray do not grieve so; but
go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the
gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same
service; for when the gold was there, you had it not, as you did
not make the slightest use of it."
