Should You Pay For Training?
I have been speaking with other online marketers who, either have in the past or are now, paying for Internet Marketing Training. I, also, discovered a person I know and respect offering a 21 day course. These training courses vary in price from $20 to $50 a month. Or, as is the case of a limited course, you may pay $99 to $399 for a week or a month of training.I have no doubt there is valuable information which can be learned from other marketers. My question is: "Should you pay for training?" When I first started marketing online, I attended several training webinars which were offered for free. To this day, this is some of the most valuable information I have learned about marketing online. Now, my primary company offers free training by other successful members. It is my opinion, if you plug in with any legitimate online business, there will be free training offered.
I know there will be people out there who have taken training courses who might claim they are invaluable. My question is still: "Should you pay for training?" I think it is obvious which side I am on. My answer is NO. You can receive training from many successful online marketers who will be happy to help you at NO Charge. I think training courses, especially those with an affiliate program attached, are just a way for the Trainer to make money.
Start thinking about what you need to do to put money in YOUR pocket, not some guru trainer. That's my lesson for today......and it was FREE.

Very interesting thread. I may be a bit biased as I'm part of a mentoring group that does training calls 5 nights a week, and it's all free regardless of your primary business. No businesses or opportunities are ever mentioned, just pure training without promotion. That being said, I have used some other systems that have a paid subscription service, and I do not see the need to pay for these. You can get all the same information from other sources for free, it just may take some digging and ma

Very true, I'll give you a good example. I promote trafficwave of course and one day I received a new free trial. So I contacted him and offered him 1 hour free training and setup on his account with an overview and explanation of the pay plan once he paid for his account. He did and in less than 30 days he had reached Tsunami level and is still at that level building his list and his business today. Other people in the same situation I will find out there promoting the next shiny new penny p

I agree Joe, this has been a good discussion and has made me re-evaluate my own thinking. I think it depends on the training and the trainer. After speaking with many marketers, there are some who swear getting training was the best thing they have ever done to increase their own marketing skills.
I was looking over the IM Report Card's top 25 which lists the Chris Farrell Membership as the #1 Top Rated Service. It is obvious some people do it right and there is a market for training.

@Catherine The main problem with a lot of paid training by so called guru's is that they course is a disguise to sell you a more expensive course and training, usually terms like one on one coaching program etc... Real training paid or free, should get to the nuts and bolts of how something works and how to implement the knowledge yourself and turn that knowledge into income.
Above all else, any coach who really knows what they're doing and really does make life changing income should be ver

Robert this is an excellent point. If you perceive the value of the training to be higher because you pay for it, then perhaps you will implement what you have learned. Which could coincide with what Joe says, when he gives the exact same training for free he doesn't see the same results as when a client pays for the training.

Very astute comment, Robert! This has become a great comment thread or really a forum on paid versus free training! Luv it!

Perceived value. That is what I believe to be the determining factor for paying for training. It may be something that you can obtain at a limited cost or for free elsewhere but the value will always be determined by the buyer not the seller. Brand X cola soda or a Pepsi. The consumer will determine worth and value.
Some training are worth it. Some are not. :-)

@Joe - I think this is a very important point. Does the person offering training make money from something besides training? I love the book by Bo Bennett "A Year to Success". He discusses this topic several times. Did the person you are learning from actually make any money applying the principles he/she is teaching? If they haven't, then what can they offer you of value?
Your point that people seem to value paid training more than free training might be true in some circumstances but I t

Well I must put in my 2 cents here.
When I started in this wonderful business
of marketing online. I KNEW NOTHING!!
I had no computer skills at all.. NONE!
I was lucky enough to get with a group of
people that really did take me by the hand.
I joined into what they were promoting.
So.. I got the training of How to Market
that product.
But what I learned from them I was able to
use with what ever else I got into.

Catherine I definitely agree with the others paying for online training is kind of similar to college you pay for training the online training which is an investing into yourself because you are educating you. Most of the well known leaders that have become successful in this industry & offer training are charging a fee for just about everything they do.

Joe, you should write your own article to get even more attention to the topic, cause everything you write is a reality check.

I am surprised no one has addressed the one item important to everyone who looks for any training regarding building your business online. Does the coach actually make money online every month. Now I am not talking about some guru who makes 6 figures, but someone who makes their real living online. Making enough money to pay the rent/mortgage, electric bill, gas bill, car repairs, medical bills, and hey how about a night out once a week huh? lol
I have given away hundreds of thousands of d

@Corey, many times, I jump to conclusions, fortunately, I think it's better that I express my thoughts instead of staying silent, that way, the person can clarify his/her positions.
@Catherine, I was not talking about regular monthly training, that can get boring after a while, just like going 2 or 3 times a week to the same gym for getting or keeping in shape is not a good idea for most people, after a while, they pay but don't go.
Training from a coach for a defined short period is much

@Philippe "rigid, all decided in advance course might be useless", that is exactly like the "education system" we put our kids through for 8 primary grades, 4 secondary years and then on to college or university (usually big dollars for this) for more of the same.
Can an MBA actually be an entrepreneur and operate their own business - or do they need a business to "manage"?
I didn't say that the recurring education and training platform was a "rigid - decided in advance course"; I assume t

I believe in learning. Perhaps I have double standard because I am willing to pay for a books to learn marketing techniques but the idea of paying a monthly fee to a trainer does not set well with me. I feel these people are taking advantage of those who want to learn and end up being the only ones making money.
With that said, as Philippe and Joe point out, if people pay for the training they take it more seriously. This is a valid argument. When you give something away for free, people

Let the ones looking for free training watch the parade.
No offense meant to anyone.
Paid training for a rigid, all decided in advance course might be useless, Corey.
Getting a coach who will answer any questions you have, and you putting your pride aside and accepting the reality of what he says to you, is a whole different ball game. Obviously, you gotta trust the coach. Like I said, you gotta be able to verify his deeds. Having one or many friends

Here's the deal, according to today's standards and technology and the advances on the internet, you can find anything you want if you search long and hard enough.
You can gain knowledge on just about anything and everything you want, additionally as you indicate Catherine, there is definitely free training available to those that are looking for it. I am offered FREE training by many programs and businesses that I am in, that includes my offline business and employment.
