What are backlinks and how do they help get traffic?

When you visit other websites and you submit your website url, that?s considered a back link.
You are submiting a link to your website from another website and when people click on it they of course navigate to your website.

Backlinking to your website is good, but there are some factors you need to take into consideration.
You don?t want to be dropping links to any kind of website that you visit, there?s a good chance you would be wasting your time doing it in this approach.
Lets take a look at a couple of factors you should realy look at before dropping links anywhere.

  1. Target the people who are interested in looking for information you can provide.
If your website is about motor vehicles such as car showcases, recalls, news etc. you want to find a place where people are interested in motor vehicles.
People in this category enjoy discussing vechicles, there may be news you can provide or recalls you can provide that some people don?t know about and would be interested in knowing about it.
  2. How much information your website contains.
You want to make sure your website contains a decent size of articles, pages with content etc.
The more content you have on your website the more likely your visitors will grow a interest and may want to return(more on this next.)
Make sure the content you are providing is not being coppied from another source cause chances are they?ve seen it already and that will turn them away.
  3. Are you adding content to your website on a regular basis?
The more content you add to your website on a timely basis the more your visitors have to read/see
This is important cause you?re considered a source to your visitors so being able to provide as much information as possible the greater the chances in keeping your visitors.

Ok, so now we got those factors taken care of lets focus on how backlinks can help our website grow with traffic.
I will be using weeblysquidoo and blogger as examples.

So you?re getting a little bit of traffic from search engines such as Bing, google, yahoo etc. but you?re not getting a whole lot, what do you do.
Your website should be the main resource, your website such as www.your-domain.com and other builders such as weebly, blogger, squidoo etc. should be used as a main resource promoter.
What i mean by this is you want to post some information that you have on your website or maybe some other basic information that relates to your website.
Drop in a couple links in to your posts where they?re relevant and your viewers are likely to click on the links which takes them to your main resource (your website)

You create a Blogger account, create some posts that focus on motor vehicles, put in a couple links where they would become relevant and your viewers are likely to click on a link. (1 source of getting traffic)

You create a Weebly account, add some content, photos of vehicles and yet again, drop a link or two where it?s relevant and yet again your viewers are likely to click on a link (1 source of traffic)

You create a Squidoo account and create a lense or two and repeat the process listed above.
Now you?re getting traffic from your squidoo account (1 source of traffic).

Do you see a potential growth in your traffic?
Now it?s important to keep your posts up to date, you don?t just want to create a couple posts, leave them and hope for the best and there?s a couple reasons behind this.

Most of these online blog publishes, website builders are SEO (Search Engine Optimized) and they give you the ability to extend it by adding your own keywordstags etc. to your pages, posts, etc. which increases your site being picked up by major search engines.
If there?s no new content being added, there?s no keywords or tags being submited so you wont get any visitors from the search engines.
Think of this as Pinging.
Everytime you create a new post or article, servers get notified and tells them some new content has been posted.
It?s like getting a knock on the door, (knock knock, hey Joe a new car has been added to your lot) what do you do?
You go out there and check it out, if you like it and it?s in good condition you will take it.
This might be a bad example but if you can imagine it the way i am right now you will know what i?m talking about.

So all in all, using the 3 examples above (blogger, weebly, squidoo) you?re now getting traffic from not only the search engines but also from other posts you have made elsewhere.
Some people will come across your post on weebly where as different people will come across your posts on blogger and so forth.
So the more posts you can get out there and the more websites (relevant websites) you can add your links to the higher your website will grow in traffic.

I want to show you a diagram i made, it might be difficult to understand but take what i said and put it into this diagram and you might get a better idea to what this diagram is saying.

Diagram

To give you a better understanding, let me explain.
You see from the search engines that there?s traffic coming to your website through the search engines.
Site 3 (Blogger for example) is getting views from the search engines as well, now if you have a link or two on Site 3 they will click it and be transfered to your Main Resource (Your website).
Site 2(Weebly for example) is getting traffic from search engines as well, providing you have a link or two on there they?re going to click on one and be transfered to your Main Resource (Your website).
So going from just having 1 website and getting whatever views you?re getting from the search engines, you?re adding a potential traffic gain X3 and if you create a Squidoo account and put some content on there as well, well now you?re adding a potential traffic gain of X4.
One thing to note though is you?re not gonna get the same ammount of traffic from one site than another and it?s going to take some work to get things rolling.
Don?t give up if you don?t see results the same day or a couple days later, get more content up, make sure it?s your content and keep it updated and you will see the increase.

That concludes this post on Backlinking to your website from other websites and i hope this post has helped you in some shape or form.
I realy hope you can take some of this and use it to increase your traffic to your website.
