Without a doubt the most interesting thing to happen to the cellphone market in the last decade is the fierce battle for consumer loyalty between Google and Apple.Earlier this month, market research firm Canalys reported that Google's Android OS is the top player in the U.S. smart phone market.

Many of us will remember the market buzz that followed when AT&T announced its exclusive agreement to market the iPhone from Apple. For a long time, it seemed impossible for a provider to match the hype that surrounded Apple's dream gadget.

When Google announced it would enter the cell phone market in 2008, critics were quick to rule them out.

2 years later, and much as the PC (with Microsoft's Windows) left Apples coughing in the dust in the 1980s, Google's Android OS is now similarly leaving behind research in Motion and Apple.

The fastest selling phones on the U.S. market right now are the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible and HTC EVO 4G, all loaded with Google's Android OS.

According to the Nielsen Company, Google's U.S. market share has continued to soar, with Android capturing 32 percent of new purchases in August. Apple's iPhone has dropped to 25 percent and RIM remains flat.

RIM (the makers of Blackberry) and Apple seem powerless to stop Google.  Apple is limited by its exclusivity with AT&T and RIM are yet to introduce a smartphone that resonates with consumers.

Right now, all the eyes and apps are on Google's Android.
