The head of INTERPOL is a two-time Identity Theft victim
It has been a while since I posted anything on Identity theft, but finding this article last night, I had to pass it on.
I constantly hear people saying it can't happen to them. They wish someone would steal their identity etc. For those who are wishing for it I can only suggest a little time on the psychiatrist's couch. But for those who think it can't happen to you, here's a wake up call. If it can happen to the rich and powerful it can happen to you.
Notice I did not say famous. If someone is famous forget about it and just put the attorney on retainer right now. The average Joe can steal their identity without ever resorting to and on the tricks of the trade.
However we are not talking about famous here. The average police officer is just as much at risk as you are no matter that people think they are magically shielded somehow because they are a cop. I personally know more than one law enforcement officer who has been a victim. But in this case we are not even talking about the average cop. We are talking about the head of the most 'powerful' law enforcement agency in the world, INTERPOL.
Mr Noble heads up INTERPOL and he has been a victim. What makes you think you are immune? Mr Noble has access to unbelievable resources that you don't, and still it happened to him. Believe me it's if not 'if' you are a victim but 'when'.

Personally there are three things you can do but none of them will make you safe. The genie is out of the bottle and those who talk about firewalls, antivirus etc need to understand that those things do more to protect your PC than you. The genie is out of the bottle as they say.
If you really want to learn more check out my group on Privacy Security and identity theft there's a lot of great information there http://www.apsense.com/group/100102

Thanks for this Cheryl.
Identity theft is one of the crimes that has esculated over the last couple of years into something even worse than scamming.
What people dont seem to realise is that having your identity stolen, can have some serious legal implications, because these thiefs use your identity to commit fraud and other serious crimes.
So far i have been very lucky, and i hope that it doesnt happen to any of us.
I know this is your field, what precautions can one take to be more safe?

It is scary that's why I do what I do. What even scarier now is that half of it in the US occurs in the workplace!

Great blog - it can happen very fast. I worked in a construction office a while ago; and one of our guys tried to do his income tax and it came back, saying someone else has already filed in his name and SSN number! He was questioned and had to PROVE his identy! It was crazy and very real and scared me! He was in southern California - and this person who stole his identy was in Nevada!
