Just how difficult is it to stop Identity thieves? Well in all honesty it's extremely difficult to investigate a crime in which victims and perpetraters are often located in different states and even different countries!  The arrest rate of identity thieves is under 5%.  That means that less than 5 out of every 100 thieves is caught.  It's one of the things that makes identity theft so attractive to criminals, it and extremely low risk crime.

But what about the 5 out of 100 who are caught?  Does being caught and even sentenced to jail stop them from committing identity theft?  The answer to that question is no.

Morroco Curry is a name that means nothing to you, but Morroco Curry is proof that even being in a jail cell will not stop the identity thief from continuing to to steal the identities of the innocent.  According to the L.A. Times, Morroco Curry was sentenced to 8 years in Federal prison in January after pleading guilty to his part in an identity theft ring.  The catch here is that while Curry was running this ring he was sitting in a jail cell in Centinela, CA serving a three year sentence for bank fraud and identity theft.

Moral of the story? Even if you can catch a thief, you can't keep them from stealing.
