How much time is spent on a website
The amount of time a visitor spends on a website depends on several things:
If you are into designing your own website, it is very important to understand the psychology in building it. The first thing a person will notice about the home page on the site is the complexity of the site and the colors.
If the home page is cluttered with information, the visitor will only be there a few seconds! Psychologically speaking they don't want to take the time to look over the page to find what they are looking for!
If the site contains a combination of colors that clash, they will only stay a few seconds! Who want's to read information on a site that looks horrible? They are so busy concentrating on the colors, they can't concentrate on the information within the pages. You should never use more than three colors on your site. There are several sites on the internet that can help you select a good combination of colors if you are color challenged.

When creating a navigation system, the visitor should be able to get to the web page that interests them with one or two clicks. Now-a-days, a visitors patience is very short. Who want's to keep clicking and clicking around a site when you can probably find it quicker someplace else?
If you have a well designed website, your visitor will be there for at a few minutes; sometimes a lot more!
A website containing good content is very important. Don't just advertise, give them something of interest to read! If you are advertising an affiliate program, have a page that explains the benefits to your visitor for becoming a member. Have an article on your site explaining some of the benefits of the product that is being sold through your affiliate program.

Great article, it is my understanding, based on a marketing course completed some years ago, a website only has approximately 4.5 seconds to impress a visitor.
