It is extremely difficult to become a prison officer. There is rigorous training and certain other criteria that must be fulfilled in order to apply for the job. Working in a prison basically implies working in a very charged up and potentially violent environment. Thus the prison officer must have a high level of mental as well as physical hardiness. The job of a prison officer  might seem to be something extremely thrilling to us, but infact it is one of the most challenging and uphill tasks ever.

The recruitment process begins with application forms, after which there is an assessment form to be filled out. This has to be done with utmost care, paying attention to every detail. The assessment form is the deciding factor regarding the recruitment of a candidate. If a candidate manages to overcome this hurdle, then he can proceed to the next level, that is, the assessment centre. The assessment forms are used to analyze the prospective officer's psyche and his ability to handle aggressive and antagonistic situations. He also has to be strong emotionally for he might have to break unhappy news to families at times. The candidate's ability to endure mental and physical strain also is taken in to account.

The RAD or Recruitment Assessment Day is held, where all aspiring prison officers selected are required to attend. This is held for the sole purpose of assessing the candidate through exercises. Prison Officer Selection Test or, POST which is an online test in conducted among the candidates. To note the candidate's comprehension of the job requirements and his practical application abilities, four role play simulations are carried out where these recruited prison officers are made to behave in hypothetical situations and play out certain positions of authority.

Excellent communicative and public relation skills are mandatory for interacting with different kinds of people. This justifies the language and communication tests that candidates have to sit for. These apart, there are also the memory tests, report writing tests and various others. It is quite natural that recruitment in this profession involves a lot of physical fitness examinations. However, the most vital part is the interview round. Brief, crisp answers are expected and applauded. Candidates can practice mock interviews to prepare for this session.

The candidate must be able to have a fairly good idea about what the job entails like salary, how a prison operates and the like. He or she must understand the conditions of living as a prison officer  and also the eligibility requirements, promotion opportunities, qualities and attributes of the job, not to mention the working hours.
